Chapter 4 - The Law Enforcement Coordination

The next morning, New Year's Day dawned bright and freezing over New York City. While the rest of the world slept off the hangover of midnight celebrations, the machinery of justice was moving at lightning speed.
I stood by the window of Maya’s hospital room, watching the pale winter sunlight reflect off the glass facades of Manhattan buildings, when my phone buzzed.
It was Arthur.
“David, we have movement,” Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and energized despite the early hour. “I spoke with the captain of the Miami-Dade Police Department’s financial crimes and special investigations unit. I forwarded all your digital evidence—the security footage, the medical reports, the bank transfers, and the note.”
“And?”
“And they didn't hesitate,” Arthur said. “A local judge signed off on emergency arrest warrants for Eleanor Miller, Chloe Miller-Cross, and Mark Cross on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, fraudulent conversion of funds, and reckless endangerment. Furthermore, because they used your credit cards and bank wires under false pretenses to fund an interstate vacation while intentionally causing bodily harm to a recovering surgical patient and an infant, federal prosecutors are reviewing the wire fraud statutes.”
“What about their location?” I asked.
“The Miami-Dade PD has already dispatched a tactical unit to the Grand Azure Resort in South Beach,” Arthur said. “They’re moving in right now.”

A cold, satisfied smile touched the corners of my mouth.
“Keep me on speaker, Arthur,” I instructed quietly. “I want to hear every word.”
