Chapter 7 - Maya’s Recovery and the Healing Process

Back in New York, the days following New Year’s Day were filled with the quiet, steady rhythm of healing.

Maya was discharged from the hospital after four days of intensive antibiotic therapy and round-the-clock monitoring. Her infection was successfully cleared, her strength began to return, and the color slowly came back to her cheeks.

We didn't return to the old apartment.

While Maya was still in the hospital, I had instructed Arthur’s real estate division to break our lease, pack up our belongings using a professional moving service, and transfer everything into a sun-drenched, fully furnished three-bedroom townhouse in a quiet, secure neighborhood in Westchester County.

When the moving van brought us to our new front door for the first time, Maya stood on the porch, holding baby Liam in her arms, tears of relief pooling in her eyes.

“David... this place is incredible,” she whispered, looking around at the quiet tree-lined street. “How did you... when did you find this?”

“While you were sleeping at the hospital,” I smiled, wrapping my arms gently around both of them. “We needed a fresh start. A place where nobody knows our past, and where nobody can ever hurt you again.”

Inside, the townhouse was warm, cozy, and filled with sunlight. The nursery was painted in soft pastel blues and greens, stocked with endless boxes of imported formula, premium diapers, and warm winter clothes for Liam. There was no clutter, no toxic energy, and above all, no shadow of the past.

Over the next few weeks, Maya and I bonded with our son in a way that felt sacred and uninterrupted. Without the constant, suffocating pressure of my mother and sister’s toxic demands, our household became an oasis of peace.

Liam grew rapidly, feeding well, gaining weight, and smiling in his sleep like a happy little angel.

Every evening, after putting Liam down in his crib, Maya and I would sit together on the plush living room sofa, drinking hot tea, talking about our future, and realizing just how strong our little family truly was.
