Chapter 5 - The Midnight Knock on the Hotel Room Door

Thousands of miles away in South Beach, Miami, the morning sun was bathing the luxury balconies of the Grand Azure Resort in golden warmth.

Inside penthouse suite 1204—a sprawling, ocean-view suite costing over twelve hundred dollars a night—my mother, Eleanor, was lounging on a plush king-sized bed, wearing a silk bathrobe and sipping a mimosa.

Chloe was sitting at the vanity mirror, meticulously applying designer cosmetics, while Mark was raiding the complimentary minibar, laughing loudly.

“Honestly, Mom, we should have done this months ago,” Chloe laughed, adjusting her diamond-encrusted earrings—purchased using the secondary credit card I had foolishly forgotten to revoke until last night. “Maya was becoming such a drag. All that crying about stitches and baby formula... please. Some women just love playing the victim.”

“Exactly,” Eleanor agreed, taking a sip of her champagne with an air of supreme self-satisfaction. “David spoils her too much anyway. A little tough love never hurt anyone. Besides, he’s probably still in Germany working his tail off, completely clueless.”

At that exact moment, a sharp, heavy pounding echoed against the heavy mahogany door of the suite.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Mark turned around from the minibar, frowning. “Who the hell is that? Room service doesn't come for another hour.”

“Go see who it is, Mark,” Eleanor commanded lazily, waving her hand. “Probably housekeeping wanting to clear the champagne flutes.”

Mark walked across the suite and pulled the door open without checking the peephole.

He didn't find housekeeping.

Standing in the doorway were three uniformed Miami-Dade police officers, their expressions stern and unyielding, flanked by two detectives in plainclothes holding leather folders.

“Mr. Mark Cross?” the lead detective asked, flashing a gold badge.

Mark’s face drained of color, his jaw dropping open. “Wh-What is this about? There must be some mistake! Do you know who we are? We’re staying in a penthouse suite—!”

“Step aside, sir,” the detective interrupted, pushing past Mark into the suite.

Chloe gasped, dropping her lipstick tube on the marble vanity as she spun around. Eleanor bolted upright in the bed, her silk bathrobe slipping off her shoulders, her face contorting in rage and confusion.

“What is the meaning of this?!” Eleanor shrieked, scrambling to her feet. “Get out of our room right now! I demand to speak to the hotel manager! Do you know how much we’re paying to stay here?!”

“Mrs. Eleanor Miller?” the detective asked, walking straight toward the bed and pulling a folded document from his leather folder.

“Yes! And you’re about to lose your jobs—”

“You are under arrest for grand larceny, felony financial exploitation, fraudulent wire conversion, and reckless endangerment,” the detective recited smoothly, snapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto my mother’s wrists with practiced efficiency.

“What?!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking into a hysterical screech as the metal cuffs clicked shut. “Are you out of your mind?! You can’t arrest us! We’re respectable people! My son is David Miller, he’s a wealthy executive—!”

“Your son is the one who filed the charges, Mrs. Miller,” the detective replied coldly.

Across the room, another officer was already placing handcuffs on Chloe as she burst into furious tears, screaming that her designer dress was being wrinkled. Mark was shoved against the wall, his hands cuffed behind his back, cursing frantically.

“Read them their rights,” the lead detective instructed, turning away from the sputtering, crying trio.

As the officers hauled them toward the door in their bathrobes and designer pajamas, the detective’s phone rang. He pulled it out, answered it, and glanced at the screen.

“Mr. Miller?” the detective said into the phone. “We have them in custody. Executed the warrants just as you requested.”

“Put me on speaker,” my voice came through the detective’s phone, broadcasted clearly across the luxury penthouse suite.

May you like

The room went dead silent. Chloe stopped crying; Eleanor froze mid-shriek, her eyes wide with sheer disbelief as she stared at the glowing screen of the officer's phone.

“Mom,” I said, my voice dangerously calm, carrying across thousands of miles through the static of the cellular connection. “Did you enjoy your vacation?”
