Chapter 6 - The Feast of Traitors

The annual Moretti Family Gala was scheduled for Saturday night at our private estate in Westbury.

It was a tradition stretching back thirty years—a grand gathering where business partners, politicians, judges, and high-ranking syndicate allies came together to celebrate the family’s strength. This year, it was also advertised as baby Luca’s formal welcome into the world.

Evelyn was ecstatic about the gala.

For days, she had been boasting on her social media channels about the event, posting pictures of her custom emerald gown and hinting at a 'major family announcement' she planned to make during the dinner toasts. She believed this would be her crowning moment—the night she publicly showcased her weak, suffering daughter while positioning herself as the matriarch of the Moretti dynasty.

She had no idea that every guest on the attendance list had been hand-picked by me for a very specific purpose.

By 7:00 PM on Saturday, the grand ballroom of the mansion was filled with two hundred of the most powerful people in the state. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over tables laden with caviar, expensive champagne, and floral arrangements.

Evelyn glided through the room like a queen, sipping prosecco, shaking hands with senators, and basking in the endless compliments from guests praising her 'unwavering devotion' to her daughter.

“She’s such an inspiration,” a high-society woman cooed near the champagne fountain. “To care for poor Isabella while running her charity foundations... Evelyn is truly a saint.”

I stood near the grand staircase, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch. Silas stood half a step behind me.

“Is everything in place?” I asked quietly.

“The media feed is locked, Boss,” Silas reported softly. “Evelyn’s team set up a live stream to her two million followers. They think they are broadcasting her charity speech. We’ve hijacked the broadcast signal. The moment you give the word, it will stream directly to every major news network, her followers, and every screen in this ballroom.”

“And Isabella?”

“She’s waiting in the study upstairs,” Silas replied, his tone softening slightly. “Dr. Vance is with her. She’s strong, Vincent. She’s ready.”

I looked across the room. Evelyn was currently standing near the main dining table, surreptitiously slipping a small vial of clear liquid into a crystal wine glass designated for Isabella’s seat at the head of the table.

She smiled to herself, smoothing down her emerald dress, completely oblivious to the ceiling cameras tracking her every movement.

“Let the performance begin,” I murmured.
