Chapter 9 - The Clearing of the House

I raised my hand, giving a simple gesture to the rear entrance of the ballroom.

The heavy doors clicked open, and four federal agents flanked by state police investigators stepped into the grand hall. Behind them stood the Federal Prosecutor—a man who had spent years trying to find a leverage point against my organization, but who now walked into my house as an invited guest to arrest a monster.

“Evelyn Vance,” the lead agent announced, stepping forward with pair of heavy steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, chemical poisoning, extortion, and healthcare fraud.”

Evelyn shrieked as the cold metal snapped around her wrists. She kicked and screamed, her emerald dress tearing as the agents hauled her toward the exit.

“Vincent! Isabella! You can’t do this to me! I built you! I gave you life!” Evelyn screamed, her voice fading down the long marble corridor until the heavy oak doors closed, cutting off her shouts forever.

The room remained still for a long moment.

I turned to the assembled guests, raising my champagne glass once more.

“I apologize for the interruption, ladies and gentlemen,” I announced smoothly, my voice carrying the unshakeable authority that defined my reign over this city. “Now, please... enjoy the rest of the evening.”

The violinists resumed playing, the waiters returned with fresh trays of drinks, and the gala continued. But everyone in that room left that night with one undeniable truth burned into their minds:

Vincent Moretti protected his own. And anyone who dared touch his family—no matter who they were—would be utterly destroyed.
