Chapter 8 - The Shattered Mask

The audio echoed loudly through the high-end sound system of the ballroom, crisp and terrifyingly clear.

“Here, sweetheart. Drink your morning tea...”

The entire room went dead silent. Two hundred people watched in utter horror as the footage played across the forty-foot screen.

They watched Evelyn unplug the nursery camera. They watched her pull the unlabelled bottles from her handbag. They watched her crush paralytic pills into her sick daughter’s cup, and they heard every single venomous whisper she hissed into Isabella’s sleeping ear.

“You don’t need Vincent, Isabella... You will always need your mother.”

Gasps of horror, sharp intakes of breath, and shouts of disbelief erupted throughout the ballroom. High-society women covered their mouths in terror; hardened syndicate bosses stared at the screen with cold, disgusted fury.

Evelyn stood frozen in the center of the room.

The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a corpse in an emerald dress. Her phone slipped from her trembling fingers, shattering against the marble floor.

“No...” Evelyn gasped, her voice cracking as she looked around at the sea of horrified faces staring at her. “No! This is a lie! This is a deepfake! Vincent manipulated the footage!”

“Did I manipulate this video too, Evelyn?” I asked coldly, pressing a button on the podium.

The screen switched to the secondary feed from two hours ago in the basement kitchen—showing Evelyn dropping the newly delivered cardiac toxin into Isabella’s wine glass right here in this very room.

“My God!” a senator gasped, backing away from Evelyn as if she carried a plague. “She tried to murder her own child!”

Just then, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

Isabella stepped into the room.

She wore an elegant white gown, her posture straight, her skin radiant, her eyes sharp and clear. She looked every bit the queen of the Moretti dynasty. Behind her walked Dr. Vance, carrying a sealed evidence bag containing the poisoned wine glass and the chemical test results.

Evelyn turned, staring at her daughter as if she were seeing a ghost.

“Isabella... darling...” Evelyn sobbed, taking a desperate step forward, raising her trembling hands. “You have to listen to me! I did it for us! Vincent was corrupting you! He was taking you away from me! I only wanted to protect you—!”

Isabella stopped three feet in front of her mother.

For weeks, Isabella had been the fragile, suffering victim. But standing there under the bright lights, carrying the blood of a resilient line and the name of Moretti, her eyes held no fear. Only cold, absolute disdain.

Slap.

The sound of Isabella’s hand striking Evelyn’s cheek echoed through the silent ballroom like a gunshot.

Evelyn stumbled back, clutching her reddening cheek, tears streaming down her heavy makeup.

“You didn't want to protect me, Mom,” Isabella said, her voice dropping into a steady, razor-sharp pitch that cut through the room. “You wanted to own me. You traded my life for your debts.”

Isabella turned her back on her mother, walking over to stand beside me at the podium. I reached out, wrapping my arm firmly around my wife’s waist, pulling her close against my side.

Evelyn looked around frantically, realizing that her live stream had broadcast the entire scene to over two million viewers worldwide. Her social media comment section was exploding with millions of messages calling for her arrest, her sponsors pulling out in real time, her carefully crafted image destroyed beyond repair in a single night.

“Vincent... please,” Evelyn begged, dropping to her knees on the cold marble floor, looking up at me with desperate, hollow eyes. “Don't do this! I’m Isabella’s mother! I’m Luca’s grandmother!”

I looked down at the pathetic creature grovelling at my feet.

“You were,” I said softly. “Now you’re just a trespasser.”
