Chapter 10 - The Fortress of Grace

Three weeks later.
The afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master nursery, filling the room with warm, golden light.
The room had been completely renovated. The old furniture, the gilded frames, and the dark velvet curtains had been stripped away and replaced with soft cream woods, plush white rugs, and fresh flowers.
Isabella sat in a comfortable rocking chair near the window, nursing baby Luca. Her cheeks were full of health, her eyes bright, and her laughter filled the quiet room as the baby made tiny, contented sounds in her arms.
I stood in the doorway, leaned against the frame, watching them.
I had spent my entire life believing that strength was measured by the size of my empire, the number of men under my command, and the fear my name inspired in the dark corners of the city.
But as I looked at my wife and son, healthy, safe, and whole, I realized true power was something entirely different.
It was the ability to build a world where the people you love could sleep without fear.
Isabella looked up, catching my gaze. She offered me a soft, beautiful smile—the same smile that had captured my heart years ago, now restored to its full brilliance.
“What are you thinking about, Vincent?” she asked gently.
I walked over, kneeling beside the rocking chair, and gently rested my hand over hers, brushing a thumb across baby Luca’s soft forehead.
“I’m thinking,” I murmured softly, “that the house is finally quiet.”
Isabella rested her head against my shoulder, letting out a long, peaceful sigh.
“It’s not just quiet, Vincent,” she whispered, looking down at our son. “It’s safe.”
Outside the estate, the city continued its chaotic rumble. Enemies would always plot, rivals would always try their luck, and new threats would inevitably emerge from the shadows of the underworld.

But inside these walls, behind the steel and stone, lived a family that had survived the storm.
And as long as I drew breath, no monster—outside or within—would ever touch them again.
