Chapter 3 - Fighting for Two Hearts

The bright lights of the St. Jude Hospital Emergency Wing burned my eyes. Sirens had screamed through the city streets, escorting the ambulance that carried me away from that house of horrors.

I woke up hours later in an ICU room surrounded by heart monitors, IV bags, and the gentle, steady beep of life-saving equipment. Sitting in a chair beside my bed, her face swollen from crying, was my sister, Clara.

"Clara..." I breathed.

She jumped up, grabbing my hand and pressing it to her cheek. "I'm here! Oh God, Sarah, I'm here. You're safe."

"The baby..." My heart pounded against my ribs in instant terror. "Where is my baby?"

"She's in the NICU," Clara said, wiping away her tears. "She's tiny, Sarah. She was born early and severely malnourished because of what those monsters did to you. But she's a fighter. Just like her mother. She's breathing on her own."

A tear slipped down my temple, soaking into the white hospital pillow. A baby girl. My daughter was alive.

The door softly opened, and Agent Ethan Cross walked in, dressed in his official federal suit. He looked far different from the tattooed criminal he had pretended to be at Marcus's dinner table.

"Mrs. Vane," Cross said, holding a tablet under his arm. "Or would you prefer your maiden name?"

"Sarah... just Sarah," I whispered. "How... how did you find me?"

Clara looked at me, her eyes filled with awe and heartbreak. "When your old phone connected to the tower for three seconds, that recording dropped into my inbox. It was only six seconds long—just the sound of Marcus laughing and you screaming. But attached to it was the GPS ping. I ran to the federal building because I knew the local police chief was friends with Marcus's family."

"And she was right," Agent Cross added, pulling up a chair. "I’ve been investigating Marcus Vane for two years on charges of offshore money laundering and corporate fraud. We knew he was dirty, but we had no idea how deeply sadistic he truly was. When your sister brought that audio to my office, I used my federal warrant to crash his dinner party under the guise of an emergency raid."

He tapped his tablet, revealing a digitized file.

"The backup phone you hid inside the floorboard of that cage saved your life, Sarah," Cross said seriously. "Forensics recovered over forty hours of continuous audio and video recordings. It contains Marcus admitting to drugging you, his mother rationing your water, and their step-by-step plan to let you die during childbirth and claim you ran away."

My blood ran cold. "They were going to kill me."

"Yes," Cross said flatly. "And they almost succeeded. But now, you've handed us the rope to hang them both."
