Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vane Dynasty
Marcus’s outburst was the final nail in his coffin.
The next day, the prosecution brought out their surprise witness: Evelyn’s former personal assistant, a woman named Karen, whom Agent Cross had tracked down in Florida.
Karen took the stand, her voice trembling as she looked directly at Evelyn.
"Mrs. Vane paid me fifty thousand dollars five years ago to falsify medical records regarding Elena’s disappearance," Karen confessed, wiping away tears. "She told me that her son had a 'temper issue' and that they needed to make sure the police never looked into the estate grounds. She kept a notebook of all the payments made to corrupt officials."
"And where is that notebook now, Karen?" District Attorney Rachel asked.
"I kept a copy in a safety deposit box," Karen replied. "I gave it to the federal agents yesterday."
The courtroom erupted into quiet chatter. The ledger didn't just expose Marcus and Evelyn; it exposed a massive web of bribery involving local judges, city officials, and police captains who had helped the Vane family cover up their crimes for over a decade.
Evelyn turned to Marcus, her voice hysterical. "You ruined everything! I spent twenty years protecting you, and you brought this gutter trash into our house!"
"Shut up, Mother!" Marcus snarled back, his hands cuffed to his waist belt. "You're the one who lost the key!"
The spectacle of mother and son turning on each other like starved rats played out on live television. Their defense team folded within hours. Arthur Vance quietly withdrew several motions, realizing there was no legal maneuver in existence that could save them.
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When they returned, the foreperson stood up, holding the verdict sheets.
"On Count 1: Aggravated Kidnapping and Torture... we find the defendant, Marcus Vane, GUILTY." "On Count 2: Attempted Premeditated Murder... GUILTY." "On Count 3: First-Degree Murder of Elena Rostova... GUILTY." "On Count 4: Conspiracy and Child Endangerment... GUILTY."

I sat in the front row, holding my daughter close to my chest. As the guilty verdicts rolled out, I felt a weight that had crushed my lungs for months finally lift away.
