Chapter 7 - The Hammer of Justice

Three weeks later came the sentencing hearing.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Marcus and Evelyn wore orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet chained together. The arrogant demeanor they once possessed was entirely gone. Marcus looked gaunt, his hair unkempt, his eyes hollow. Evelyn looked like a frail, broken old woman, stripped of her wealth and status.

Judge Thomas Harris looked down at the defendants from his high bench with pure disgust.

"In my thirty-five years on the bench," Judge Harris spoke, his voice booming through the silent room, "I have rarely encountered such a stomach-turning display of cruelty, entitlement, and utter lack of human compassion. You, Marcus Vane, treated your lawful wife worse than a stray animal. You used your immense wealth as a shield to perpetrate unimaginable evil."

He turned his gaze to Evelyn.

"And you, Evelyn Vane, enabled, encouraged, and participated in the systematic destruction of two young women’s lives. You are a disgrace to motherhood and humanity."

Judge Harris stacked his papers and looked Marcus directly in the eye.

"For the murder of Elena Rostova, you are sentenced to Life in Prison without the possibility of parole. For the aggravated torture and attempted murder of Sarah Vane, you are sentenced to a consecutive term of Forty Years. You will die behind bars, Mr. Vane."

Marcus flinched as if he had been struck by a physical blow.

"As for you, Evelyn Vane," the judge continued, "you are sentenced to Thirty-Five Years at the Maximum Security Women's Penitentiary. Given your age, this is effectively a life sentence."

The judge banged his heavy wooden gavel one final time. "Court is adjourned."

As the guards dragged Marcus toward the holding cells, he turned his head toward me one last time. For months, that look had terrified me. But now, looking into his eyes, I saw nothing but a weak, pathetic cowardly shell.

"Sarah..." he whimpered, his voice cracking. "Please..."

I didn't say a word. I simply turned my back on him, took Clara’s hand, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
