Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century

The trial opened two months later amidst a media frenzy that paralyzed the city. Satellite trucks lined the streets outside the county courthouse, and hundreds of protesters held signs demanding justice for me and Elena.

I walked into the courtroom wearing a simple navy suit, holding my head high. Clara walked beside me, pushing a stroller that held my baby girl, whom I had named Hope.

Across the room sat Marcus and Evelyn. Marcus wore an immaculate Italian suit, looking smug and composed, confident that his money could buy his freedom. Evelyn sat beside him, dressed in modest black clothes, clutching a pearl rosary and putting on the act of a fragile, heartbroken grandmother.

"All rise for Honorable Judge Thomas Harris," the bailiff called out.

The trial moved with terrifying speed. Arthur Vance, the defense attorney, spent two days cross-examining doctors, trying to prove I was prone to hallucinations. He questioned my character, my background, and even insinuated that I had faked my physical injuries.

Then, District Attorney Rachel Vance took the podium.

"Your Honor, the defense claims that my client built a 'sensory enclosure' at Sarah's request," Rachel announced, turning to face the jury. "They claim Marcus Vane was a loving husband caring for a sick wife. Today, we let the evidence speak for itself."

Rachel wheeled a heavy audio monitor to the center of the courtroom. She pressed play on the master file recovered from my hidden backup phone.

The speakers crackled to life.

[Audio File 014 - Dated 3 weeks prior to rescue]

Marcus's Voice (Crystal clear): "Look at you. Squealing like a pig over a piece of rotten apple. You think anyone is coming for you, Sarah? Nobody gives a damn. My mom already posted on your Facebook that you're taking a retreat in Arizona."

Sarah's Voice (Sobbing, muffled): "Please... Marcus... I haven't had water in two days... the baby isn't moving..."

Evelyn's Voice (Cold, mocking): "Let her beg, Marcus. It builds character. If she dies, we bury her right next to Elena under the floorboards. The concrete is already mixed."

A collective gasp echoed across the entire courtroom. Several jurors covered their mouths in horror.

Marcus’s lawyer sprang from his seat. "Objection! Your Honor! This audio is unauthenticated!"

"Overruled!" Judge Harris slammed his gavel down, his face dark with fury. "Sit down, Mr. Vance!"

The audio continued to play. The metallic sound of Marcus kicking the bars, my desperate screams, and finally, Marcus’s voice from the night of the raid: "I'll cut that baby out of you myself if you scream again."

In the audience, news reporters were furiously typing. In the defense box, Evelyn’s hands began to shake so violently she dropped her rosary. Marcus’s face turned red, his composure completely shattering.

"She recorded me?!" Marcus suddenly roared, standing up and slamming his fists onto the defense table. "That miserable bitch recorded me in my own house?!"

"Order in the court!" the judge shouted, banging his gavel.

"You ruined my life!" Marcus screamed, turning his rage toward me, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "I should have put a bullet in your head six months ago!"

"Secure the defendant!" Judge Harris ordered.

Four armed bailiffs tackled Marcus to the floor, forcing him to the ground in front of the entire jury. The mask of the perfect, charming billionaire husband had finally been ripped away, exposing the monster underneath for the whole world to see.
