Chapter 4 - Evidence in the Dark

"He’s not just a sadist, Isla," I said, pointing to the laptop screen. "He’s a collector."

We were in the basement, the only place where the signal wouldn't leak. I had spent three days digging through the dark web, guided by a contact from my teaching days—a former student who now worked in cybersecurity.

"Look at the file names," I whispered.

There were hundreds of them, hidden within layers of encrypted folders Julian kept for his "business" investments. They were categorized by name. There was a file for a woman named Elena, another for a woman named Sarah, and finally, one for Isla.

It wasn't just a diary of abuse; it was a ledger of leverage. He documented their insecurities, their fears, and the exact moments he had broken them. He had a literal inventory of human suffering.

"He did this to others," Isla whispered, her hand covering her mouth. Tears streamed down her face. "He told me I was the only one who didn't 'appreciate' him. He told me I was the reason he had to be so hard."

"He lied to you to make you his accomplice in your own destruction," I said, my voice hardening.

I began to print the files. We didn't need the local authorities—they were in the Sterling family's pocket. We needed the state, and we needed the public.

We discovered that the "navy dress" incident—the one that had triggered my intervention—was a test run. He was planning to take Isla to a private retreat in the mountains the following week, a place where no one would know if she disappeared. The "shopping bag" found in the rain wasn't a gift; it was a leash. Inside the lining of the dress, we found a small, sophisticated GPS tracker sewn directly into the hem.

"He intended to drop you off at the retreat and have you 'lose your way' in the woods," I realized, the horror finally setting in.

Isla looked at me, her fear transforming into something cold and sharp. "He’s not going to stop, is he?"

"No," I said. "But neither are we."
