Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

Julian did not come for us with lawyers this time. He came with a whisper and a shadow.

It happened on a Tuesday. I had gone to the market to gather supplies, leaving Isla behind with strict instructions to bolt the reinforced doors. But Julian was smarter than that. He didn't break in; he seduced her through the technology he still controlled—a forgotten smart-home hub that hadn't been fully disconnected.

When I returned, the house was silent. My heart slammed against my ribs. I found the front door ajar, and on the kitchen table, a single red rose—petals torn, crushed into the wood.

Isla was gone.

Panic, raw and unadulterated, nearly brought me to my knees. But then I saw it: a tiny, almost invisible scratch on the backsplash of the counter. She had used a paring knife to carve a symbol—a jagged 'X'. It was the mark of the rendezvous point we had discussed as a "last resort."

I drove like a maniac, ignoring every traffic law, my mind reeling. I found her at the edge of the woods behind our old cabin. She was standing there, shivering, her hands empty. Julian had been there. He had cornered her, forced her into a confrontation, and demanded she return.

"He said he'd burn your house down with you inside," she sobbed as I pulled up, shielding her from the wind. "He said you were nothing, that nobody would look for a bitter, aging woman if you 'disappeared' in a fire."

"Isla, look at me," I commanded, grabbing her face. "He is scared. He is using threats because he has lost his control over the narrative. He didn't take you back because he knew we had the files. He’s trying to intimidate us into silence."

She leaned into my chest, her sobs turning into a low, terrifying growl of anger. "I'm done running, Mom. I'm done being the victim."

"Good," I said, pulling her into the car. "Because we aren't running anymore. We’re going to hunt."
