Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Courtyard

The second-floor library of the Moretti estate was a cathedral of dark mahogany, leather-bound volumes, and shuttered sunlight. It smelled of ancient paper, polished wood, and power.

Elise stood near the massive stone fireplace, her fingers nervously smoothing down the skirt of her navy blue dress. The grandfather clock in the corner ticked with heavy, deliberate authority. Every second that ticked by felt like another turn of a screw.

The heavy oak doors clicked open, and Vincent walked in, flanked by a massive, broad-shouldered man with a jagged scar running from his jawline down into his collar. Vance—Vincent’s chief enforcer and shadow.

"Leave us, Vance," Vincent commanded without looking back.

Vance gave Elise a long, hard look—a look that evaluated how fast a human body could be disposed of—before turning and slipping silently out of the room, closing the heavy doors behind him.

Vincent walked over to the mahogany desk, pulled out a thick leather-bound ledger, but didn't sit down. He leaned his hips against the edge of the desk, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Thirteen days," Vincent began, his voice dangerously quiet. "That’s how long you’ve been in my house. In that time, four different nannies quit before their first week was up. One locked herself in the pantry. Another claimed the house was haunted. You... you danced around in yellow rubber gloves at three in the morning and made my daughters laugh for the first time in fourteen months."

Elise kept her chin up, refusing to shrink under his intense gaze. "They were terrified, Mr. Moretti. They didn't need discipline or silent hovering. They needed to know the world hadn't completely ended."

"You think you understand what my daughters need?" Vincent asked, a dangerous edge sharpening his tone. He pushed off the desk and took two slow steps toward her. "You think because you managed to pull off a cheap comedy routine that you understand the forces circling this house?"

"I know children," Elise fired back, her protective instincts overriding her fear. "And I know grief. Staring at you like you're an executioner twenty-four hours a day isn't helping them heal. It's making them believe fear is the only emotion allowed in this family."

The silence that followed her words was so absolute it felt physical.

Vincent stopped dead in his tracks. For a second, Elise thought she had crossed a line that could not be uncrossed. She braced herself for him to fire her on the spot, to throw her out into the rain with her meager belongings.

Instead, a strange, dark flash crossed Vincent’s eyes—something that looked dangerously close to vulnerability, instantly locked away behind an iron gate.

"You have a sharp tongue for someone who could be replaced with a phone call," Vincent murmured, though the harshness had bled out of his voice. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a slender silver key, laying it flat on the corner of the desk.

"What is that?" Elise asked, eyeing the key warily.

"The key to the east wing conservatory," Vincent said smoothly. "The girls like the sunlight in the mornings, but the regular staff doesn't go in there. It’s private. Keep them there afternoons. Starting tomorrow, your salary is doubled."

Elise stared at the key, then up at him. "Doubled? Mr. Moretti, I didn't ask for a raise."

"It’s not a reward," Vincent replied, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register. "It’s hazard pay. Because as of today, the men who want to hurt me know there’s a new face inside this house. And in my world, a new face quickly becomes a target."

Before Elise could digest the chilling weight of his warning, a sharp, muffled crash echoed from somewhere down the hallway, followed immediately by the sound of glass shattering.

Vincent’s body went rigid. In a fraction of a second, the cool, composed CEO vanished, replaced entirely by the ruthless mafia boss. His hand dipped beneath his jacket, his fingers wrapping firmly around the grip of a concealed pistol.

"Stay here," Vincent ordered, his voice an absolute command. "If anyone opens these doors who isn't me or Vance... you use the panic button behind the drapes."

Before Elise could speak, Vincent slipped out of the library, pulling the heavy doors shut behind him, leaving her alone in the quiet, shadowed room with the ticking clock and a cold dread settling deep in her stomach.
