Chapter 9 - The Confession

The grand foyer of the Moretti mansion had transformed into a warzone.

Shards of crystal from the massive chandelier littered the polished marble floor, sparkling amidst spent brass casings and shattered woodwork. Gunfire echoed off the vaulted ceilings as Vincent’s elite enforcers traded suppressive fire with the Falcone mercenaries pouring through the broken front doors.

Elise stood back-to-back with Vincent behind a massive marble pillar, the deafening roar of submachine gun fire ringing in her ears.

"Left flank!" Elise shouted, raising her pistol and firing twice through the haze of smoke. A masked mercenary clutching his shoulder stumbled backward and crashed into a marble statue.

Vincent didn't even look back as he eliminated a second gunman lunging from the grand staircase. He pivoted smoothly, his movements fluid and deadly, before pulling Elise closer behind the pillar to reload.

"You're insane," Vincent muttered, a breathless laugh escaping his lips amidst the chaos. "I hired a nanny, not a commando."

"You should check your recruitment standards, Mr. Moretti!" Elise fired back, a surge of adrenaline keeping her hands rock-steady.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors leading from the study burst open.

Dante Moretti stepped out, holding a silver-plated pistol pressed firmly against the temple of a trembling Mrs. Gable, while two armed Falcone enforcers flanked him.

"Drop your weapons!" Dante screamed, his face twisted in a manic, desperate grin. His clothes were stained with soot, his hair wild. "Drop them, Vincent, or the old woman loses her head right now!"

Vincent froze. He stepped out from behind the pillar, lowering his weapon an inch, his dark eyes locking onto his traitorous brother with a hatred so pure it could have melted steel.

"Let her go, Dante," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "This is between you and me."

"It's always been between us!" Dante laughed hysterically, pressing the barrel harder against Mrs. Gable’s temple. "Father always loved you best! Always gave you the crown, the empire, the legacy! Well, guess what, brother? The empire is burning to the ground today!"

Dante shifted his gaze slightly, his eyes landing on Elise standing behind the pillar. A malicious smirk spread across his face.

"And as for your little girlfriend..." Dante raised his left hand, holding a concealed micro-detonator with a glowing red LED light. "I wired the east wing nursery with C-4 twenty minutes ago. One push of this button, and your precious daughters join Elena in heaven."

The air in the foyer vanished.

Vincent’s face drained of all color. The untouchable crime lord, the man who had faced down every cartel and syndicate on the East Coast without flinching, looked as though he had just been stabbed through the heart.

"Dante... no," Vincent whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing horror.

Dante’s thumb hovered over the detonator button, his eyes wild with psychotic triumph. "Say goodbye to your legacy, Vincent—"

Bang.

A single, perfectly placed gunshot echoed through the foyer.

Dante’s eyes widened in utter disbelief. The micro-detonator slipped from his nerveless fingers, clattering uselessly against the marble floor. A bright red bloom blossomed across the center of Dante’s chest. He staggered backward, let go of Mrs. Gable, and collapsed heavily onto the stairs, his lifeless eyes staring up at the shattered crystal chandelier.

Mrs. Gable stumbled forward, sobbing, and Elise caught her, pulling the terrified housekeeper into a safe embrace.

Vincent slowly lowered his smoking gun, staring down at his dead brother. There was no triumph in his eyes—only the heavy, crushing weight of a family finally torn apart by its own poison.

From the top of the grand staircase, Vance appeared, lowering his smoking carbine. "Nursery is secure, Boss. C-4 has been disarmed."

Vincent let out a long, shuddering breath, the pistol slipping from his hand and clattering against the floor. He turned around, walking blindly toward Elise through the smoke and debris.

Before she could speak, Vincent pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her neck, holding her with a desperate, crushing intensity as if she were the only real thing left in a world made of ash.

"You saved them," Vincent whispered against her skin, his voice breaking. "You saved everything."
