Chapter 8 - The Trap at the Docks

The morning sun rose over a washed, glistening coastline, but the calm was deceptive.

In the underground command center beneath the main estate, glowing monitors displayed live camera feeds from the Moretti shipping terminals in Brooklyn and Queens. Red warning lights were flashing across the master console.

"The Falcone syndicate just hit Pier 4," Vance reported, his face grim as he tapped furiously on a tactical keyboard. "They didn't just hijack the shipment, Boss. They left a calling card—three of our foremen tied up with throat cuts."

Vincent stood at the head of the stainless-steel table, his hands braced flat against the surface. His face was a mask of cold, unmitigated wrath. The brief, tender vulnerability he had shown in the nursery the night before had vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating warlord of the East Coast underworld.

"Dante," Vincent snapped, his voice cold as ice. "Where is my brother?"

"He hasn't answered his phone since four this morning," Vance replied, hesitating for a fraction of a second. "And his security detail’s transponders went dark near the Queens warehouse district an hour ago."

Elise stood near the back of the command room, her heart dropping into her stomach. "You think Dante set this up?"

"Dante didn't just set it up," Vincent said, standing up slowly, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire. "He handed the security codes to the Falcones in exchange for a seat at their table. He thought my grief made me weak."

Vincent turned around, walking directly toward Elise. The enforcers in the room tactfully looked away.

"I have to go to the Queens warehouse," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a low, urgent register. "I’m taking sixty men. It’s going to be a bloodbath."

"Take me with you," Elise said instantly.

"No," Vincent barked, his authority absolute. "You stay here. The estate is locked down. Vance leaves a strike team behind—"

"Vincent, listen to me," Elise stepped closer, grabbing his arm with a grip that left no room for argument. "Dante hates you. If he’s working with the Falcones, he knows your weak spot isn't your docks or your money. It’s this house. If you leave the estate undefended while you're ambushed in Queens, they won't fight you at the docks—they’ll strike here while you're away."

Vincent froze. The sheer tactical brilliance of her warning hit him like a physical blow.

He looked down at her—at the brave, brilliant former nanny who had outsmarted his enemies, calmed his grieving daughters, and stolen his frozen heart.

"You're right," Vincent whispered, a dark realization dawning in his eyes. "It's a diversion."

Before he could give another order, the main command monitor suddenly flickered, cutting away from the shipping terminals to the exterior security feed of the front estate gates.

Three armored black SUVs had just smashed through the iron security perimeter, barreling straight up the private driveway toward the main entrance.

Gunfire erupted across the audio speakers as the estate guards returned fire.

"They're already here," Vance snarled, drawing his weapon and racking the slide with a sharp clack.

Vincent didn't panic. His face settled into an expression of absolute, terrifying calm. He reached into his shoulder holster, pulled out a second pistol, and handed it directly to Elise.

Elise stared down at the heavy black weapon resting in her palms, her breath catching in her throat.

"Can you use it?" Vincent asked, his dark eyes locked onto hers.

"My father was a firearms instructor before he died," Elise said, her voice steady as she gripped the handle and thumbed off the safety. "Point me at the door."

A rare, fierce smile touched Vincent’s lips—a smile of a king going to war with his queen by his side.

"Vance, secure the nursery!" Vincent roared, turning toward the armory doors as the heavy oak front entrance of the mansion began to splinter under the weight of incoming sledgehammers. "Nobody touches my daughters! Today, the Moretti family cleans house."
