Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Legal Battle

Two days later, the war officially spilled into the open.
Victoria Sterling’s office was located on the forty-fifth floor of a glass skyscraper in the Loop, overlooking Lake Michigan. She was a woman in her late fifties, with sharp gray hair, tailored charcoal blazers, and eyes that could pierce through armor.
She sat behind her massive mahogany desk, reviewing the financial audit Rachel had provided, alongside the audio recording Rachel had made of the phone call with Amber Collins on the night of my labor.
"This is delicious," Victoria said, setting the papers down with a satisfied smile. "Michael Harrison isn't just an adulterer; he’s an embezzler and a fraud. He has committed breach of fiduciary duty, grand larceny, and severe emotional distress."
"What's our first move?" I asked, sitting across from her with Maya sleeping peacefully in her carrier beside my chair.
"Our first move was supposed to be serving him with divorce papers," Victoria replied, her smile fading slightly. "However, it appears your husband has decided to strike first."
She slid a thick legal document across the desk.
I picked it up. My eyes scanned the bold headers at the top of the page:
EMERGENCY PETITION FOR SOLE TEMPORARY CUSTODY AND RESTRAINING ORDER Petitioner: Michael Harrison Respondent: Catherine Harrison Allegations: Severe Postpartum Psychosis, Emotional Instability, Parental Alienation.
My breath hitched. "He... he’s trying to take Maya away from me?"
"He filed it two hours ago," Victoria explained coldly. "He claims that the trauma of labor caused you to suffer a mental breakdown. He alleges that you locked him out of the recovery room in a fit of hysterical rage and are refusing him access to his daughter because of delusion. He’s also petitioning the court to freeze all joint marital assets, including your personal accounts, claiming you are mentally incompetent to handle finances."
The absurdity of it made me want to scream. He was using my pain—the very pain he caused—to frame me as crazy.
"Can he do this?" I demanded, my hands shaking against the armrests.
"He can try," Victoria said calmly. "The emergency hearing is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock before Judge Margaret Vance. Judge Vance is old-school, rigid, and deeply concerned with child welfare. Michael’s high-priced lawyers know this. They are betting on the fact that you are an exhausted, newly postpartum mother who will crumble under interrogation."
"I won't crumble," I said through gritted teeth. "I will die before I let that monster touch my daughter."
"Good," Victoria smiled. "Because tomorrow, we don't just defend. We obliterate."
That night, news broke on Chicago’s top gossip blogs.
Someone—clearly Amber Collins—had leaked a twisted narrative to the press. Headlines ran across social media:
"Billionaire Executive Michael Harrison Blocked from Seeing Newborn Daughter by Unstable Wife!" "Postpartum Tragedy: Harrison Capital CEO Battles for Baby's Safety!"
Commenters online were merciless, calling me "unhinged" and accusing me of using a child as leverage. The public humilation was suffocating. I spent half the night holding Maya, terrified that the legal system would tear her from my arms.
At 1:00 a.m., my phone buzzed. A text message appeared on the screen from an unsaved number, but I recognized it instantly:
Catherine. Stop this madness. Sign the custody agreement and hand over the trust management, and I will dismiss the mental health claims. Don't ruin your own reputation. You know you can't beat me. — Michael
I stared at the text. His arrogance was sickening. He truly believed he owned the world.
Instead of replying, I took a screenshot and forwarded it directly to Victoria Sterling.
The next day at 2:00 p.m., the courtroom was suffocatingly tense.
Michael sat at the petitioner’s table, looking handsome, solemn, and deeply mournful in a dark suit. His lead attorney, a slick man named Arthur Vance, looked ready to pounce. Sitting behind Michael in the spectator gallery, wearing a bright red designer dress, was Amber Collins. She gave me a smug, triumphant smirk as I walked in.
I wore a simple, immaculate navy blue sheath dress, my hair pulled back into a sleek bun. I carried myself with absolute poise, holding my head high. Beside me stood Victoria and Rachel.
Judge Margaret Vance slammed her gavel. "We are here in the matter of Harrison v. Harrison regarding an emergency custody petition. Mr. Vance, present your case."
Arthur Vance stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, my client is a distraught father. On the night of his daughter's birth, his wife suffered a tragic mental breakdown. She refused his presence, launched verbal assaults, and has since gone into hiding, denying a loving father his right to bond with his newborn. We have affidavits from witnesses claiming Mrs. Harrison was hysterical and unstable."
Judge Vance frowned, turning her sharp eyes toward me. "Mrs. Harrison, these are serious allegations. How do you respond?"
Victoria Sterling stood up. "Your Honor, my client does not need to respond with words. We respond with cold, hard facts."
Victoria turned toward the back of the courtroom. "We call our first witness: Dr. Daniel Brooks."
Michael’s lawyer jumped up. "Objection! Dr. Brooks is merely an attending physician!"
"Overruled," Judge Vance snapped. "Step forward, Doctor."
The double doors of the courtroom opened.
Daniel walked down the aisle. He looked breathtakingly authoritative in his dark suit, his face calm, sharp, and commanding. He took the stand, swore the oath, and looked directly at the judge.
"Dr. Brooks," Victoria began. "Were you present during the delivery of Maya Harrison at 4:12 a.m. on November 14th?"
"I was," Daniel replied, his deep voice filling the courtroom. "I personally delivered Maya."
"Can you describe Mrs. Harrison’s psychological and emotional state during and immediately after labor?"
Daniel rested his hands calmly on the wooden rail. "Mrs. Harrison demonstrated extraordinary emotional resilience, profound mental clarity, and immense physical strength under conditions of severe psychological trauma."
"What trauma?" Judge Vance asked, leaning forward.
"The trauma of being abandoned by her husband during a life-threatening storm," Daniel testified clearly. "I was present when Mr. Harrison failed to answer his phone for hours. I was present when Mrs. Harrison was subjected to an abusive, callous phone call from Mr. Harrison's assistant, Miss Amber Collins, who explicitly informed Mrs. Harrison that her labor was 'not Mr. Harrison's responsibility.'"
Gasps rippled through the gallery.
Michael’s face went completely red. Amber squirmed uncomfortably in her seat.
"Doctor," Victoria asked, "in your expert medical opinion, is Catherine Harrison suffering from postpartum psychosis or mental instability?"
"Absolutely not," Daniel declared firmly, looking straight at Michael. "Catherine Harrison is a exceptionally loving, completely grounded, and devoted mother. The only instability in this child's life comes from the deceitful, predatory actions of the petitioner, Michael Harrison."
"Objection!" Arthur Vance roared.
"SIT DOWN, MR. VANCE!" Judge Vance thundered, her gavel pounding against the desk.
Judge Vance turned her glare toward Michael. "Mr. Harrison, step to the podium."
Michael stumbled forward, his polished composure completely shattered. "Your Honor, I... I can explain—"
"Silence!" Judge Vance barked. "You filed a sworn petition accusing your wife of mental breakdown, while you were absent from her delivery to be with your assistant! You abused the court's emergency custody system to cover up your own grotesque misconduct!"
Judge Vance picked up her pen and signed a document with fierce strokes.
"The petition for emergency custody is DENIED with prejudice," Judge Vance ruled loudly. "Full temporary legal and physical custody of Maya Harrison is awarded exclusively to Catherine Harrison. Furthermore, I am issuing a temporary restraining order against Michael Harrison. You are to stay five hundred yards away from your wife, your daughter, and her residence."
Judge Vance slammed her gavel down. "Court is adjourned!"
I let out a long breath I felt like I had been holding for days. Tears of relief streamed down my face.
As Michael stood frozen at the podium, his life beginning to unravel before his very eyes, I turned to look at Daniel.

He stepped down from the witness stand, walked over to me, and offered a soft, triumphant smile.
"I told you," Daniel whispered softly, gently wiping a tear from my cheek. "You have a fire inside you, Catherine."
