Chapter 8 - Rising From the Ashes

Eighteen months passed in a blur of joy, growth, and vibrant life.
Under my leadership as CEO, Vance Heritage Financial flourished, becoming one of the top ethics-focused investment firms in the country. We launched a fifty-million-dollar philanthropic foundation dedicated to supporting single mothers, funding emergency maternal care clinics, and providing legal aid to women escaping domestic and financial abuse.
My life was no longer defined by betrayal; it was defined by purpose.
And at the heart of that purpose was my daughter.
Maya was now a vibrant, bubbly two-year-old. She had strong legs, an infectious laugh, and a fiercely independent spirit. And her favorite person in the entire world wasn't a toy or a cartoon character—it was Daniel.
It was a warm Saturday morning in late May. The botanical gardens of Chicago were in full bloom, filled with thousands of vibrant tulips, roses, and cherry blossoms.
I stood near the central fountain, wearing a light yellow summer dress, watching Daniel chase Maya through the grass. Maya was squealing with delight as Daniel pretended to be a gentle monster, catching her, swinging her into the air, and pressing raspberries onto her tummy as she dissolved into fitful giggles.
"Daddy Daniel! Again! Again!" Maya cheered, clutching his neck.
My heart swelled until it felt like it might burst.
He had become her real father in every way that mattered. He was the one who stayed up with her when she had a fever, the one who taught her how to hold a spoon, the one who read her bedtime stories every single night, and the one whose face lit up whenever she called him Daddy.
Rachel walked up beside me, handing me an iced coffee. "Look at them. You’d think they were biologically linked."
"Love is stronger than biology," I said softly, smiling as Daniel carried a giggling Maya back toward us.
"Mommy! Look!" Maya beamed, holding up a bright yellow dandelion Daniel had picked for her. "Pretty flower!"
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," I laughed, kissing her sticky cheek.
Daniel set Maya down near Rachel, who offered to take her to get strawberry ice cream at the garden cafe.
Once they walked away, Daniel turned to me, taking my hand and leading me toward a secluded stone gazebo covered in blooming white wisteria. The air smelled of sweet jasmine and warm sunshine.
"You look breathtaking today, Catherine," Daniel said, looking at me with the same intense devotion he had shown since the day we met.
"You're not so bad yourself, Dr. Brooks," I teased softly, adjusting the collar of his linen shirt.
Daniel took a deep breath. For the first time since I’d known him, he looked nervous.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.
My breath caught in my throat.
Daniel dropped down on one knee onto the stone floor of the gazebo. He opened the box, revealing a magnificent custom ring—a ethical pink sapphire surrounded by a halo of brilliant, warm diamonds that caught the sunlight like sparks of fire.
"Catherine," Daniel said, his voice deep, steady, and rich with emotion. "Two years ago, I walked into a hospital room during the worst storm of your life. I watched you turn heartbreak into undeniable strength. You and Maya brought light back into my world when I thought I would always be walking in the shadow of my sister's loss."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, warm and sweet.
"I don't just want to stand beside you in the storm, Catherine," Daniel continued, looking straight into my soul. "I want to share every sunrise with you. I want to build a life filled with laughter, security, and endless love. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, and letting me be Maya’s father forever?"
I didn't hesitate for a single second.
I dropped down onto my knees beside him on the stone floor, throwing my arms around his neck, kissing him with everything I had.
"Yes!" I cried out, laughing through my tears. "Yes, Daniel! A thousand times yes!"

Daniel slid the gorgeous sapphire ring onto my finger, wrapping his arms around my waist and lifting me up as we laughed together under the canopy of white blossoms.
From behind the bushes, a loud cheer erupted. Rachel was holding Maya, who was clapping her tiny hands wildly, shouting, "Yay! Mommy and Daddy!"
