Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

The courtroom victory broke Michael’s momentum, but he was far from finished.
Stripped of his legal leverage over Maya, Michael retreated to his stronghold: Harrison Capital. He used his corporate PR team to silence the press, locked down the company’s internal servers, and called an emergency board of directors meeting for the following Monday to cement his position as CEO and finalize a massive fifty-million-dollar merger with an offshore venture firm—a merger that would absorb the stolen trust funds and permanently cover his financial tracks.
What Michael didn't know was that while he was preparing his corporate defense, Rachel and I were preparing his corporate execution.
On Monday morning, the glass-walled board room on the executive floor of Harrison Capital was filled with ten of the most powerful institutional investors in Chicago.
Michael stood at the head of the long marble table, wearing a dark gray suit, projecting total confidence. Amber stood near the door, managing the presentation slides.
"Gentlemen," Michael announced smoothly, clicking his pointer toward the screen. "Today we vote to finalize the merger with Aura Global Investments. This partnership will double our market valuation and secure our position in the European market."
"Before you call that vote, Michael," a clear, commanding voice echoed from the doorway, "I believe the board deserves to see the rest of the financial portfolio."
Every head in the room turned.
I stepped through the double glass doors.
I was wearing a sharp, tailored black trousersuit, a ivory silk blouse, and high heels that clicked with absolute authority against the polished floor. Beside me walked Rachel, carrying a stack of leather-bound audit dossiers, and Victoria Sterling.
Michael’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. "Catherine?! What the hell are you doing here? Security! Escort these people out!"
"Security won't be touching us, Mr. Harrison," Victoria Sterling announced calmly, stepping forward and laying a legal document on the center table. "Mrs. Harrison is not here as your estranged wife. She is here as the primary trustee of the Vance Family Estate, which holds thirty-four percent of the voting shares in Harrison Capital."
The board members gasped. Muffled whispers broke out across the room.
"That's absurd!" Amber blurted out, her voice shrill as she panicked. "Michael owns the controlling interest!"
"Michael used to manage my late father's shares under a revocable proxy," I said, walking slowly down the length of the table, looking every single board member in the eyes. "A proxy that I officially revoked at 9:00 a.m. this morning with the SEC."
Michael turned pale. His hands began to shake visible against his podium. "Catherine... you don't know what you're doing. You don't understand corporate governance—"
"I understand numbers, Michael," I interrupted coldly. "And more importantly, my sister understands forensic accounting."
Rachel stepped forward, sliding a leather dossier in front of each board member.
"If you open page four," Rachel presented crisply, "you will find the digital paper trail documenting three point two million dollars embezzled from the Vance Estate over the last eight months. You will also see that Aura Global Investments—the firm Michael is trying to merge with today—is a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the sole ownership of Miss Amber Collins."
The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos.
"What?!" one elder board member roared, slamming his hand on the table. "Is this true, Harrison?!"
"It's a lie! It's a fabrication from a bitter woman!" Michael screamed, pointing a trembling finger at me. "She’s trying to destroy this company out of revenge!"
"Then explain this, Michael," I said, pulling a small silver recorder from my pocket and setting it on the marble table. I pressed play.
Amber's voice echoed loudly through the high-end speakers of the boardroom:
"Michael is with me. And honestly? Your dramatic labor situation isn't his responsibility tonight... You should try going one night without making everything about yourself."
The silence that followed the recording was suffocating. Every board member stared at Michael and Amber with sheer disgust.
"This recording," I declared softly, "was made at 3:07 a.m. on the night my daughter was born, while my husband was using embezzled company funds to buy luxury penthouses for his mistress. Is this the man you want leading your firm?"
The senior board member stood up, his face grim. "I motion for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Michael Harrison as CEO and Chairman of the Board, effective immediately."
"Seconded!" three other members shouted instantly.
"You can't do this to me!" Michael shrieked, his arrogant persona completely collapsing into pathetic panic. "I built this company!"
"My father built this company, Michael," I said, stepping up to him until I was standing inches from his face. "You were just the man he foolishly trusted to run it. You're fired."
Amber tried to sneak out the back door, but two uniform Chicago police officers stepped through the entrance, blocking her way.
"Amber Collins? Michael Harrison?" the lead officer announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are both under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked around Michael’s wrists, he looked at me, tears of shock and terror spilling down his cheeks.

"Catherine... please!" he sobbed as the officers pulled him toward the door. "Think of our history! Think of Maya!"
"I am thinking of Maya," I said, watching him being dragged away in disgrace. "That's why I'm making sure she never grows up to be anything like you."
