Chapter 6 - Desperate Moves

With Michael and Amber stripped of their corporate power and facing federal indictment, the fallout was catastrophic for them, but a glorious resurrection for me.
The board of directors unanimously voted to appoint an interim committee led by Rachel and me to stabilize Harrison Capital. We immediately rebranded the firm back to its original name: Vance Heritage Financial. Within two weeks, stock prices surged as investors celebrated the removal of corrupt leadership.
However, a cornered predator is always the most dangerous.
Michael was released on a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bail posted by his aging mother, pending his criminal trial. Stripped of his money, his reputation, his job, and his mistress—who had turned on him instantly in custody, blaming him for the entire fraud scheme to save herself—Michael had nothing left to lose.
And his madness shifted entirely toward me.
It was a rainy Thursday evening. I had spent the day at the hospital for Maya’s one-month wellness checkup. Daniel had accompanied us, taking us to a quiet Italian bistro afterward to celebrate Maya’s glowing bill of health.
As Daniel parked his car outside Rachel’s brownstone, the rain fell in thick, heavy sheets, echoing the night Maya was born.
"I'll carry Maya inside," Daniel said warmly, reaching into the back seat to carefully unclip her infant carrier.
"Thank you, Daniel," I smiled, stepping out of the car under his umbrella. "For everything. I don't know where I would be right now without you."
Daniel set the carrier down on the sheltered porch, then turned to face me under the warm glow of the porch light. His eyes were deep, tender, and intense.
"You would be right here, Catherine," Daniel said softly, reaching out to gently tuck a wet strand of hair behind my ear. "Because you are unbreakable. But I’m glad I get to stand beside you."
My heart hammered against my ribs—not from fear, but from a sweet, powerful warmth that had been growing between us for weeks.
Before either of us could speak, a shadow detached itself from the dark alleyway beside the brownstone.
A figure lunged forward into the light.
"CATHERINE!"
I gasped, stepping back.
Michael stood at the bottom of the porch steps. He was soaked through, wearing a rumpled coat, his face hollow, unshaven, and twisted with manic desperation. He smelled heavily of cheap whiskey.
"Michael?!" I breathed, terror spiking through my chest. "You’re breaking the restraining order! Get away from here!"
"You ruined me!" Michael screamed, stepping onto the first wooden stair. "You took my money! You took my company! You turned the whole damn city against me!"
Daniel stepped instantly in front of me and Maya, his body blocking the stairs. "Back off, Harrison! Right now!"
Michael pulled his hand from his coat pocket.
A glint of black steel caught the porch light.
A gun.
My blood turned to ice. "MICHAEL, NO!"
"I gave you eleven years!" Michael sobbed, his hands shaking violently as he aimed the firearm directly at Daniel’s chest. "And you traded me for this damn doctor! If I can't have my life back, nobody gets to have it!"
"Michael, listen to me," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm, taking a slow, calculated step down the stair toward the barrel of the gun. "Look at what you’re doing. Maya is right behind me. Do you really want your daughter’s first memory of her father to be a murder?"
"Shut up! Shut up!" Michael shrieked, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "She's my daughter! You took her from me!"
"You threw her away at 3:07 a.m.!" I shouted from behind Daniel, my fear transforming into blinding rage as I stood tall. "You chose Amber! You chose money! You chose yourself! Don't you dare blame anyone else for the pit you dug yourself into!"
Michael’s eyes flickered with a brief, agonizing moment of realization. His hands trembled harder.
That split second of hesitation was all Daniel needed.
With explosive speed, Daniel lunged forward, grabbing Michael’s wrist and driving him backward down the porch steps onto the wet lawn.
BANG!
A gunshot fired into the night air, shattering the quiet neighborhood silence.
"DANIEL!" I screamed, my heart stopping.
The two men tumbled across the mud. Daniel knocked the gun from Michael’s grip, pinning him to the ground with overwhelming physical strength, twisting Michael’s arm behind his back until he let out a painful howl.
Sirens immediately began wailing in the distance—Rachel had seen everything from the window and called the police.
Within two minutes, three police cruisers screeched to a halt in front of the brownstone, their red and blue lights flashing against the wet pavement. Officers swarmed the lawn, wrenching Michael off the ground and slamming him against the hood of a cruiser.
I ran down the steps, my knees shaking uncontrollably. "Daniel! Are you hurt?! Oh God, are you shot?!"
Daniel stood up from the mud, wiping rain from his face. He checked his side, then looked up at me with a breathless smile. "I'm okay, Catherine. I'm fine."
I didn't care about the rain. I didn't care about the police. I threw my arms around Daniel’s neck, burying my face into his shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.
Daniel wrapped his arms tightly around my waist, lifting me slightly off the ground, holding me as if he would never let go.

"It's over, Catherine," Daniel whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "He can never hurt you again."
As the officers shoved a weeping, broken Michael into the back of the police car, I looked at the man who had tried to destroy me. He was gone. The nightmare was finally, truly over.
