Chapter 3 - The Freezing of the Empire

By midnight, the emergency room at St. Jude’s Hospital was quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of cardiac monitors in my mother’s private recovery suite. Margaret was resting peacefully, hooked to IV fluids and receiving round-the-clock care. Dr. Sterling, the lead attending physician, had confirmed what Elena’s testimony and the medical intake already proved: acute dehydration, malnutrition, and multiple blunt-force trauma injuries consistent with chronic abuse.
I sat in the dim corner of the room, my phone glowing in my hands.
My corporate legal counsel, Arthur Vance, had been working since 9:00 PM. A series of encrypted emails rolled into my inbox, detailing the systematic dismantling of Vanessa’s financial lifeline.
“All primary and secondary credit cards issued under corporate sponsorship have been frozen,” the first email read.
“Personal checking, savings, and investment accounts linked to Vanessa Cross have been placed under administrative hold pending forensic audit for fraudulent withdrawals,” read the second.
“Eviction notice and restraining order served at the main estate. She has been barred from entering any Valeon Technologies corporate properties or subsidiary offices effective immediately.”
My phone buzzed with an incoming call. It was Arthur.
“Daniel,” Arthur said without preamble. “The bank accounts are locked tight. But you should know—Vanessa didn't go quietly. When the bailiffs served her with the temporary restraining order at a downtown hotel bar where she tried to book a suite, she threw a martini in the manager’s face and screamed that her husband was a billionaire who would ruin them all.”
“Did she reach out to any board members?” I asked, rubbing my temples.
“She tried calling Director Harrison twice. Harrison didn't pick up. Word travels fast in executive circles, Daniel. The moment the police report hit the local precinct wire, Valeon Technologies’ PR team issued a preemptive statement distancing the corporation from personal conduct violations, and the stock didn't even dip. The market knows you run a tight ship.”
“Good,” I said, looking over at my mother, who stirred slightly in her sleep. “File the formal divorce petition first thing in the morning. Ground of extreme cruelty, elder abuse, and financial fraud. I want an expedited hearing.”
“Consider it done,” Arthur replied. “By the way... how is Elena handling everything? The police took her formal statement an hour ago. She’s essentially the star witness.”
“She’s remarkable,” I murmured, glancing toward the hallway where Elena was quietly speaking with a nurse, ensuring my mother’s evening chart was correct. “She saved my mother’s life. Make sure her legal fees and security are covered indefinitely by the firm.”
“Will do, boss. See you at dawn.”
I hung up and stood, walking over to adjust my mother’s blanket. For months, while I was traveling across Asia securing venture capital and expanding Valeon’s global infrastructure, I had trusted the wrong person. I had left my mother in the care of a woman I thought was my partner, only to discover a monster wearing designer silk.
The door clicked open softly, and Elena stepped inside, holding a cup of black coffee.

“She’s sleeping deeply now, Mr. Valeon,” Elena said softly, offering the cup to me. “The nurse said her vitals are stabilizing.”
“Please, Elena,” I said, taking the cup and looking into her weary, compassionate eyes. “Call me Daniel.”
