Chapter 7 - Elena's True Strength

With the legal battle moving steadily toward trial, life at the mansion slowly began to heal.

My mother had returned home from the hospital, her recovery progressing under the dedicated care of a professional nurse and the warm, comforting presence of Elena. The heavy deadbolt on my mother’s bedroom door had been removed by my own hands, replaced by a warm, sunlit sitting area where fresh flowers bloomed on the windowsill every morning.

One evening, after a long day at corporate headquarters, I found Elena in the expansive kitchen, preparing a batch of my mother’s favorite chamomile tea and traditional lemon cookies.

The soft glow of the kitchen lights cast a golden hue across her dark hair. She moved with quiet grace, a stark contrast to the chaos and malice that had poisoned this house for years.

“How is she holding up today?” I asked, leaning against the doorframe and loosening my tie.

Elena turned around, smiling warmly. “She spent two hours in the garden with the physical therapist. She’s getting stronger every day, Daniel. Her spirit has returned.”

“And you?” I asked, stepping closer. “You’ve carried an incredible burden, Elena. You saved my mother, and you stood up when everyone else looked away. How can I ever truly thank you?”

Elena looked down, a faint blush dusting her cheeks. “You don't need to thank me, Daniel. What I did... I didn't do it for a reward. I did it because it was right. No human being deserves to be treated the way she was.”

“You have more courage than anyone I’ve ever met,” I said softly, stopping just a foot away from her. “In business, I deal with strategists, negotiators, and executives every day. But true bravery isn't about boardrooms or capital. It’s about standing between a helpless person and cruelty.”

She looked up, her dark eyes meeting mine. In that quiet kitchen, surrounded by the warmth of healing and restored peace, the professional boundary between us dissolved into something deeper, more honest, and undeniable.

“I was terrified every single day, you know,” Elena confessed quietly. “When she raised her hand... I thought I was going to lose everything. But I looked at Mrs. Valeon, and I saw my own grandmother. I couldn't just stand there.”

“I’m glad you didn't,” I whispered, reaching out to gently touch her hand. She didn't pull away. Instead, her fingers curled softly against mine.
