Chapter 4 - The Hospital Room Revelation

Three days passed in a blur of medical charts, legal depositions, and quiet vigils. My mother grew stronger by the day, the color slowly returning to her cheeks as IV nourishment and proper medication worked their magic.
On the fourth afternoon, while Elena was reading a book by the window, my mother opened her eyes, looked directly at me, and asked for the truth.
“Did they arrest her, Daniel?” Margaret’s voice was still raspy, but the tremor had lessened.
“She’s out on bail, Mom, but her assets are frozen and she’s facing criminal charges for elder abuse and extortion,” I said, pulling my chair closer to the mattress. “She can’t come anywhere near you or any of our properties.”
Margaret closed her eyes for a moment, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. “I was so foolish. I thought... I thought if I complained, she would make things worse, and I didn't want to distract you from your work. She told me every single day that you only kept me around out of obligation. She told me you were planning to put me in a state-run facility once Valeon went public.”
Elena lowered her book, her face flushing with anger. “That was a lie, Mrs. Valeon. Every time Daniel called from overseas, the first thing he asked about was your health. He had a custom stair-lift installed before he left, and he checked your medical logs every single morning.”
Margaret looked at Elena with profound tenderness, reaching out a fragile hand. “If it weren't for this brave girl, I wouldn't be here. She risked her job, her safety, everything, just to sneak food into my room when Vanessa was out playing bridge.”
I looked at Elena, feeling a profound surge of gratitude and respect that went far beyond employer and employee. “Elena, why didn't you come to me sooner? Why didn't you call my private line?”
Elena looked down at her hands, fidgeting nervously with the hem of her cardigan. “I tried, Mr. Valeon—Daniel. Two months ago, I tried to call your office. But Mrs. Cross intercepted the call, fired the head housekeeper for speaking to me, and threatened to report me to immigration authorities if I ever spoke a word outside the house. She had eyes everywhere. I had to wait for the exact moment when the security system had a glitch so I could install the cloud backup on the hallway router without her knowing.”
“She threatened you with immigration?” My voice dropped into a dangerous, icy register. “Add federal coercion and intimidation to her charges, Arthur,” I muttered, pulling out my phone to text my attorney instantly.

“She thought she was untouchable,” Elena whispered, looking out the hospital window at the grey city skyline. “People like her... they think money and designer clothes make them invincible. But they don't know what it’s like to actually fight to survive.”
“They’re about to find out,” I said firmly.
