Chapter 8 - The Divorce Settlement and Criminal Indictment
The formal divorce decree and the criminal trial verdict arrived within weeks of each other, sealing Vanessa’s fate with surgical precision.
In the civil family court, the judge granted an immediate, uncontested dissolution of marriage on grounds of extreme cruelty and fraudulent misrepresentation. Because of the ironclad prenuptial agreement Vanessa had signed eight years prior—and the exhaustive forensic audit proving her systematic embezzlement of household funds—she walked away with exactly zero dollars in alimony or asset division. Every luxury handbag, piece of jewelry, and designer garment she had accumulated during our marriage was seized by the court to help pay restitution to victims of her financial mismanagement.
Two days later, the criminal court rendered its final judgment.
Vanessa Cross stood before the bench in a shapeless grey jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her makeup completely gone. The judge didn't mince words. Citing the severity of the elder abuse, the premeditated nature of the false imprisonment, and the federal wire fraud charges uncovered during the state audit, the gavel came down with a resounding crash.
“Seven years in state correctional facility, without the possibility of parole for the first four.”
As the bailiffs placed handcuffs on her wrists and led her away toward the holding cells, she didn't scream or curse. She simply stared straight ahead, a hollow, broken shell of the woman who had once believed she could rule an empire through fear and arrogance.
When I walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sun, Arthur Vance handed me the final certified copies of the settlement.
