Chapter 2 - The Aftermath
The fluorescent lights of the hospital emergency room were a stark contrast to the darkness of my home. While Emily was being treated for dehydration, exhaustion, and the physical trauma inflicted by my mother’s "restraint," I sat in the waiting room with Noah nestled in my arms. Every time he stirred, my heart jumped, the memory of Linda’s voice—“If taking care of one baby is too much for you...”—playing on a loop in my mind.
An hour later, a social worker named Sarah joined me. Her expression was grave but kind. "Mr. Brooks, your wife is resting now. The doctor has documented the bruising, and a report has been filed with the police. Given the circumstances involving your mother, we’ve taken the liberty of issuing an emergency protective order, but we need to discuss your long-term plan."
"She’s never coming near us again," I said, my voice firmer than it had ever been. "I don’t care if she’s my mother. She’s a danger to my family."
"It’s not just your mother," Sarah said, tapping her clipboard. "Your sister, Ashley, was present in the home for three days. Your wife has indicated that while she didn't physically participate in the restraint, she was verbally abusive and actively prevented Emily from calling for help. Do you have any evidence of this?"
I pulled out my phone. I hadn’t looked at my call logs since I got home, but I checked them now. The pattern was chilling. My mother had been calling my phone every two hours, but my call history showed Emily had tried to reach me ten times in the last twenty-four hours—calls I had never received.
"She deleted the incoming calls from my phone while I was in Illinois," I realized aloud. "She intercepted them so I would think Emily was fine."

"That constitutes coercion and isolation," Sarah noted. "This is going to be a long legal road, Ethan. Are you prepared to lose that relationship entirely?"
I looked down at Noah. The boy had his mother’s eyes. "I lost the relationship the second she put her hands on my wife. I’m just fighting for my future now."
