Chapter 8 - The Sabotage

The final week before the permanent protective order hearing, the intensity escalated into pure warfare. Linda, sensing her grip slipping, launched a "scorched earth" campaign. I woke up one morning to find our front yard vandalized with paint, and shortly after, I received a call from the freight company’s corporate office—my access credentials had been revoked. She had managed to convince a regional contact, a man who owed her family a favor, that I was suffering from a psychotic break and had become a liability to the company.
I lost my job. It was a staggering blow, one that was meant to crush my financial ability to continue the legal battle.
Simultaneously, the media began to buzz with rumors. Anonymous blog posts and social media accounts, clearly managed by hired help, painted Emily as an unfit mother who had staged the abuse for insurance money. My mother was using every resource at her disposal to rewrite the narrative, turning the victim into the perpetrator.
I hit rock bottom. Sitting in our kitchen with a stack of bills and no income, I felt the familiar weight of my mother’s voice in my head: “You’re nothing without me.”
But then, Emily walked in. She was no longer the shrinking violet she had been weeks ago. She held Noah firmly against her chest, her eyes bright with a resolve I had helped foster.

"She’s burning her bridges, Ethan," she said, her voice steady. "She’s so busy trying to destroy us that she’s making mistakes. Look at the email headers on these 'tips' being sent to your boss. They’re coming from a private server she owns. She’s not just lying—she’s committing digital fraud and harassment. We don't need the job to win the war. We need the truth."
Her courage ignited something in me. I realized that my mother’s greatest weakness was her arrogance; she assumed everyone else would play by her rules. I stopped worrying about the job and started gathering the final pieces of the puzzle: the server logs, the witness statements from the nursing staff, and a sworn deposition from Ashley, who had finally decided to break her silence.
