Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting War

By the end of the week, the battle lines were drawn. My mother was released on bail, and almost immediately, the narrative began to shift. I arrived at the office to find an email from my boss—a courtesy notice that an anonymous tip had been sent to HR alleging I was having a "mental breakdown" and was neglecting my duties due to a "volatile domestic situation."
It was Linda. She wasn't just coming after my marriage; she was trying to destroy my career.
When I arrived home that evening, I found my sister, Ashley, sitting on the front porch. She didn't look like a woman who had been helping a new mother; she looked like a spy awaiting orders.
"Mom is heartbroken, Ethan," Ashley said, her tone dripping with mock pity. "She’s telling everyone you’ve let this woman turn you against your own blood. Emily has always been unstable, you know that. The delivery, the hormones... she probably fell and blamed it on Mom."
"You’re a liar, Ashley," I said, stepping past her to unlock the door. "I have the medical report. I have the police statement. And I have the phone records showing you and Mom held Emily hostage in that house."
Ashley stood up, her face darkening. "You’re making a mistake. Mom has friends in this town. You think you can survive without her money? Without her connections?"

"I don't need her money," I retorted. "And I certainly don't need a family that views a six-day-old infant as a pawn."
Inside, the house felt cold. Emily was home now, but she spent most of her time in the nursery with the door locked. The trauma of the last few days had taken a toll that no amount of comfort could immediately fix. She would jump at the sound of the doorbell, and she rarely spoke above a whisper. I realized then that my mother’s goal wasn't just to control me—it was to break Emily’s spirit so completely that she would never have the strength to leave.
