Chapter 3 - The Bloodline and the Bureau

The private dining room on the second floor of Aurelia was soundproofed, lined with mahogany paneling and heavy velvet curtains. Outside the glass doors, four armed guards stationed by Elias kept the press, the guests, and the restaurant management at bay.

Inside, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Dr. Harrison Vance, the chief medical examiner for Bellmont Hospital and a long-time personal physician to the Vale family, wiped his brow as he sealed two cotton swabs into sterile plastic vials.

"The rapid genetic sequencer at my lab can process this in three hours, Elias," Dr. Vance said quietly, setting the vials inside a metallic biohazard case. "But off the record... looking at the bone structure, the eyes, and that birthmark... you don't need a test to know."

Elias sat on the leather sofa, his hands buried in his face. When he looked up, his eyes were bloodshot. "Twenty years," he choked out, staring at me as I sat across from him wrapped in a heavy wool coat his assistant had brought me. "Twenty years I searched every river, every city, every orphanage in this country. Where were you, my child?"

"I don't remember the beginning," I said, my voice low and measured. "I just remember waking up on a bench at the central bus station when I was six. I had a red coat and a broken blue suitcase with no tags. Nobody came for me. The state put me in a group home, but I ran away when I was twelve because the director used to lock us in the basement when we didn't raise enough money begging."

Elias let out a ragged, painful sob, covering his mouth.

"I worked in kitchens," I continued. "I slept on flour sacks behind bakeries. I cleaned grease traps at four in the morning. I learned that if you stay quiet and keep your head down, people forget you're there. And when they forget you're there, they tell you everything."

"And Vanessa?" Elias asked, his voice hardening into steel.

"Vanessa was adopted four years after you disappeared, Amara," Dr. Vance supplied gently from the side. "Elias was drowning in grief. His late wife, Catherine, couldn't handle the empty nursery. They adopted Vanessa from a private agency to fill the void."

"She didn't fill anything," Elias spat bitterly. "She spent twenty years reminding me of what I lost, while secretly draining my life's work."

The door to the private room burst open.

Harrison Cross, the lead field agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Division, walked in holding a tablet. Behind him stood two federal agents holding heavy black cases.

"Mr. Vale," Agent Cross said, giving Elias a brief, respectful nod. "We just reviewed the contents of the USB drive your daughter provided."

He stopped, catching himself, and looked at me with deep respect. "Miss Reed—or rather, Miss Vale—the data on this drive is immaculate. It contains four hundred gigabytes of audio files, bank wire confirmations, and offshore account numbers. Vanessa Vale hasn't just been blackmailing your board members, Elias. She's been laundering money for a regional human trafficking syndicate through Aurelia’s luxury catering accounts."

Elias stood up slowly, his silver hair catching the dim light. "Human trafficking?"

"They used high-end wine shipments to move illegal capital across state lines," Agent Cross explained. "Over sixteen million dollars has passed through this restaurant's books in the last two years alone. Vanessa was the primary signature on every fraudulent invoice."

Downstairs, a muffled crash echoed through the floorboards, followed by the sound of splintering wood and screaming.

Agent Cross unholstered his sidearm. "It seems Miss Vale just realized the building is surrounded."
