Chapter 4 - The War for Aurelia

When we descended the grand spiral staircase into the main dining room, the scene looked like a war zone.
Vanessa had smashed a decorative glass display case near the entrance, holding a jagged six-inch piece of heavy crystal in her hand. Her hair was wild, her seventy-thousand-dollar gown torn at the hem, her eyes wide with a manic, cornered insanity.
Three restaurant security guards stood ten feet away, their hands raised defensively.
"Get away from me!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I built this place! I am a Vale! You can't touch me!"
"Vanessa, put the glass down," Elias said, walking down the steps with a cold, terrifying calm.
"You!" she shrieked, pointing the bloody piece of glass at Elias, then shifting her furious glare to me. "You brought this street rat into my house! You looked at her for five seconds and threw away twenty years of my life!"
"You threw your own life away, Vanessa," I said, stepping onto the marble floor beside my father. "You had everything I spent twenty years praying for. You had a home. You had a father who loved you. You had safety, education, and unlimited wealth. But you were so consumed by greed that you turned a sanctuary into a crime scene."
"Shut up! Shut up!" Vanessa screamed, rushing forward suddenly, aiming the sharp crystal directly at my face.
She was fast, driven by pure, unadulterated madness.
But Vanessa had grown up in air-conditioned ballet studios and private country clubs. I had spent my youth dodging abusive orphanage directors, violent street thugs, and drunk cooks in dark alleys. I didn't flinch.
As she lunged, I pivoted on my left heel, stepping inside her reach. I grabbed her wrist with my right hand, twisted it downward with the exact technique an old dishwasher in Chicago had taught me years ago, and slammed her elbow into my shoulder.
The glass shattered on the floor.
Before Vanessa could recover her balance, I swept her ankles out from under her. She hit the marble floor with a heavy, breath-stealing thud, her face pressed firmly against the wine-stained carpet where she had tried to humiliate me two hours earlier.
Agent Cross stepped forward instantly, pressing his knee into her back and snapping iron handcuffs over her wrists.
Click. Click.
"Vanessa Vale," Agent Cross read in a flat, emotionless voice. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, extortion, money laundering, and assault."
Vanessa thrashed against the carpet, her face smeared with dried red wine and dust. "Father! Help me! Father!"
Elias walked over, looking down at her with a look of profound, hollow pity.
"You are not my daughter," Elias said softly. "As of this moment, your power of attorney is revoked. Your trust fund is frozen. Every cent you ever spent from my estate will be audited, reclaimed, and transferred to the true heiress of Vale International."
He turned his back on her, reaching out his hand to take mine.
"Take her away," Elias commanded.
As the federal agents dragged Vanessa toward the glass double doors, where dozens of news cameras were already flashing wildly in the midnight darkness, she turned her head, screaming at the top of her lungs.

"This isn't over! You hear me, Maya?! You're still just trash from the kitchen!"
I didn't answer. I simply adjusted my coat, looking at the restaurant around me.
