Chapter 6 - The Trap at the Gala

Three days later.
The news of the Vale scandal had completely dominated every television network and newspaper in the country.
THE RETURN OF AMARA VALE: FROM WAITRESS TO HEIRESS. VANESSA VALE INDICTED ON 24 FEDERAL COUNTS.
Vanessa’s high-priced criminal defense attorney had managed to secure a brief, twelve-hour emergency bail release for her under strict house arrest conditions, claiming she needed to gather personal legal medical documents from her private safe inside Aurelia’s executive office before her formal indictment hearing.
What Vanessa didn't know was that the emergency bail release was a trap, coordinated between the FBI, Elias, and myself.
At 11:30 PM, the street outside Aurelia was dark and quiet. Rain slicked the cobblestones of Bellmont's luxury district.
Inside the dark, silent restaurant, I stood on the second-floor balcony, looking down into the empty dining room. The wine stains had been cleaned from the carpet. The broken glass had been swept away.
A key clicked softly into the lock of the rear service entrance.
Footsteps echoed against the tile—hurried, desperate, dragging steps.
Vanessa slipped into the building, wearing a dark raincoat with a hood pulled low over her face. She was carrying a heavy leather duffel bag. She didn't head for the executive office. She headed straight for the wine cellar in the basement.
I walked down the grand staircase slowly, my heels making no sound on the fresh carpet.
"Looking for the bearer bonds, Vanessa?" I asked, my voice echoing through the shadows.
Vanessa spun around with a frantic shriek, dropping her duffel bag. She pulled a small, silver revolver from her coat pocket, her hand trembling violently as she pointed it at my chest.
"You..." she hissed, her face pale, her eyes rimmed with red, dark circles. "You took everything from me! My title, my money, my father!"
"I didn't take anything that belonged to you," I said calmly, taking another step down the stairs. I was wearing an elegant, tailored black jumpsuit, my hair pinned up cleanly, the crescent birthmark on my chest visible in the soft moonlight filtering through the high windows. "You stole a life that wasn't yours, and when you got comfortable, you started preying on everyone around you."
"Shut up!" she screamed, raising the gun. "I am going to open that safe, take the five million in bearer bonds, and leave this country! If you step one inch closer, I will put a bullet in your heart!"
"Check the cylinder, Vanessa," I said softly.
Vanessa blinked, confused. She looked down at the gun in her hand.
From the shadows of the dining room alcoves, eight FBI tactical officers stepped forward, their laser sights painting bright red dots across Vanessa's chest, arms, and head.
Agent Cross walked out from behind the bar, holding a clear plastic bag containing six silver bullets. "Your defense lawyer worked for us, Miss Vale. He emptied your piece before you left the house."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. The silver revolver slipped from her numb fingers, clattering loudly against the floor.
She fell to her knees, clutching her head, letting out a horrific, guttural scream of defeat.
