Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Sins

By 2:00 AM, the dining room of Aurelia was empty of guests, but bustling with federal agents, forensic accountants, and police officers tagging evidence.
Elias’s private legal team—a squad of eight high-priced attorneys in dark suits—had arrived and set up a temporary command center at the head table.
Dr. Vance walked back into the room holding a encrypted tablet. His face was lit by a radiant, emotional smile.
"The lab rushed the markers," Dr. Vance said, handing the tablet directly to Elias. "Zero percent chance of error. Maya Reed is Amara Catherine Vale. She is your daughter."
Elias stared at the green text on the screen. Tears spilled silently over his eyelids, dropping onto the glass tablet. He turned to me, pulling me into a fierce, overwhelming embrace that smelled of expensive cologne, old paper, and a father's profound, twenty-year-old longing.
"My little girl," he wept, pressing his face into my hair. "My sweet little girl... I am so sorry I wasn't there to protect you."
"You found me, Father," I whispered, the word Father feeling strange, heavy, yet intoxicatingly warm on my tongue. "That's all that matters."
"It's not all that matters," Elias declared, stepping back and wiping his eyes. He turned to his head attorney, a sharp-eyed woman named Eleanor Vance. "Eleanor, what is the status of Aurelia?"
"The restaurant is a subsidiary asset registered under Vanessa's shell company, Vale Hospitality LLC," Eleanor reported, tapping her stylus against her folder. "Because the company was built using fraudulent loans secured against Vale International’s core capital, we have initiated an emergency corporate seizure. By court order, the entire property, the brand name, and the land title have been forfeited to satisfy outstanding corporate damages."
"Good," Elias said without hesitation. "Draft the transfer papers immediately."
"To whom, sir?" Eleanor asked.
Elias looked at me, a proud, fierce glint in his silver eyes. "To Amara Vale. My daughter survived by working in the kitchens of this city. Now she will own the grandest kitchen in Bellmont."
"Wait," I said, stepping forward. "Father... I don't want to just own a luxury restaurant for rich people to drink fifty-thousand-dollar wine."
Elias blinked, surprised. "What do you want to do with it, Amara?"
I looked around at the glittering crystal chandeliers, the velvet chairs, the polished silver ice buckets. Then I looked toward the kitchen doors, where the dishwashers, line cooks, and busboys stood huddled in fear, wondering if they were going to lose their jobs tonight.
"I spent eight years cleaning floors where people treated me like garbage," I said, my voice rising with strength. "I want to rebuild Aurelia. I want to turn it into a place that employs youth from foster homes, group homes, and shelters. I want to pay them living wages, teach them culinary arts, and give them a future. I want to use Vanessa's stolen fortune to fund a foundation for missing and abandoned children."

Elias stared at me for a long moment. Then, a massive, triumphant smile spread across his face.
"You aren't just my daughter," Elias said, his voice thick with pride. "You are your mother's child through and through. Draft the documents, Eleanor. Give her 100% ownership of Aurelia and a fifty-million-dollar starting grant from my personal account."
