Chapter 3 - The Digital Surveillance and the Hidden Security Feeds

Leaving Clara sleeping under the watchful eye of a private night-shift nurse, I drove back to the sprawling suburban estate in the exclusive gated community outside Chicago.
The night was pitch black, broken only by the cold amber glow of streetlights reflecting off the wet pavement. When I pulled into the circular driveway, the house looked dark and peaceful from the outside. But as I walked through the double mahogany front doors, the oppressive silence felt heavy, suffocating, and dripping with hypocrisy.
My mother, Eleanor, was sitting in the formal study with my younger brother, Julian.
Julian was twenty-eight years old, perpetually unemployed, accustomed to living a life of luxury funded entirely by my corporate success. He wore a silk bathrobe, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch, while Eleanor sat regally in her wingback chair, tapping her manicured fingernails against the armrest.
When they heard the front door close, both of them turned.
“Sebastian!” Eleanor snapped, standing up immediately, her face contorted in an aggressive mix of indignation and self-righteous fury. “Thank goodness you’re back! Do you have any idea how humiliating it was to have your private security guards force my friends off the property? My reputation in the charity league is in ruins! And all over that ungrateful, dramatic wife of yours!”
Julian took a slow sip of his scotch, nodding in lazy agreement. “Yeah, seriously, bro. You’re letting her walk all over you. Mom’s just trying to keep the house running while you’re out closing deals, and Clara pulls this pathetic fainting routine. You need to put her in her place.”
I didn't answer them immediately.
I walked slowly across the foyer, my heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. I didn't take off my suit jacket. I didn't soften my expression. I stood directly in front of them, towering over both of them with a chilling, dead silence in my eyes.
“You have no idea what you’ve done, do you?” I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.
Eleanor scoffed, crossing her arms. “What I’ve done? I’ve raised you! I gave up my entire life after your father died so you could become a CEO! And how do you repay me? You kick my friends out of the house like common criminals and chase after a charity case who can't even stand up straight!”
“A charity case,” I repeated softly. “The woman you called a charity case sold her grandmother’s gold earrings twelve years ago to feed me when we had two hundred dollars in our bank account. She worked double shifts so I could buy the servers that launched this company. And while I was out working to fund this multi-million-dollar estate, you turned her into a slave in her own home.”
Julian laughed nervously, swirling his drink. “Oh, come on, drama king. Mom was just toughening her up. You know how sensitive Clara is.”
“Really?” I asked.
I pulled my smartphone from my breast pocket, unlocked the secure enterprise-grade encryption app connected to our smart-home automation system, and tapped the screen.
The large 85-inch television mounted on the study wall flickered to life.
Instead of cable news, high-definition security footage from the dining room, kitchen, and hallways began to play on a loop.
“Under the table is where women who live off a man belong!” Eleanor’s shrill, mocking voice echoed loudly through the silent study.
On the screen, the video showed Clara, eight months pregnant, scrubbing the marble kitchen floor by hand while Eleanor stood over her, tapping a wooden cane against the tile to make her move faster. Another clip showed Julian walking past Clara as she carried a heavy basket of laundry, intentionally tripping her and laughing as she stumbled against the wall. A third clip—the most sickening of all—showed Eleanor tossing a half-eaten pork chop onto the floor beneath the dining table, pointing down, and commanding Clara to eat it before she was allowed to drink water.
The color drained entirely from Eleanor’s face. The haughty, self-righteous mask shattered instantly, revealing the desperate, panicked coward underneath.
Julian dropped his glass of scotch. The crystal tumbler shattered against the Persian rug, dark amber liquid soaking into the expensive wool like blood.
“Where... where did you get those?” Julian stammered, his face turning ghostly pale. “The... the security system was supposed to be restricted!”
“You forgot that as the primary corporate account holder, I have master administrative privileges across every single smart-home node,” I said, stepping closer to them until I could smell the stale alcohol and expensive perfume radiating off my mother. “I didn't just watch today’s banquet, Julian. I pulled the archives for the last six months.”
I tapped my phone screen again, bringing up a detailed ledger.
“For the past two years, Mother has charged over four hundred thousand dollars in luxury boutique purchases, first-class flights to Europe for her friends, and gambling debts for Julian on the uncapped corporate credit card I provided for household expenses. You stole from my company, you embezzled from our family trust, and you systematically tortured my pregnant wife.”
Eleanor’s knees buckled. She grabbed the edge of the wingback chair to steady herself, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and fierce defiance.

“I am your mother! You cannot treat me like this! Without me, you are nothing!”
“No, Mother,” I said, my voice dropping into an absolute, chilling finality. “Without you, I am finally free.”
