Chapter 7 - The Brother’s Betrayal and the Collapse of Julian’s Defense

Three days after the birth of my son, Leo Vance, my younger brother Julian made a desperate, pathetic attempt at self-preservation.

I was sitting in Clara’s private recovery room, watching little Leo sleep peacefully in his clear plastic bassinet, when my phone rang. It was an unknown cell number.

I stepped out into the hallway and slid my thumb across the screen.

“Sebastian? Bro, thank God you picked up,” Julian’s voice rattled through the speaker, frantic, slurred, and desperate. He sounded like he hadn't slept in days. “Listen, man, I’m sorry. Okay? I was just following Mom’s lead! She brainwashed me into thinking Clara was just a gold-digger! But I’m broke, Sebastian. My apartment lease is terminated, my car was repossessed this morning, and the police are threatening to execute the embezzlement summons. You’ve got to help me out. Just drop the charges and wire me fifty grand so I can get a place in Miami.”

I stared out the window toward the Chicago street traffic below, feeling nothing—no anger, no pity, just absolute, hollow indifference.

“Julian,” I said quietly. “When Clara was scrubbing the kitchen floor on her knees while eight months pregnant, where were you?”

“Bro, come on, that was Mom’s idea—!”

“When you tripped her in the hallway and laughed as she hit the wall, whose idea was that?” I interrupted, my voice dropping into an icy register. “When you sat in the study sipping twenty-year-old scotch while watching her starve, did anyone force you to do that?”

Silence hung heavy on the line.

“You’re an adult, Julian. You made your choices,” I continued. “You chose cruelty over family. You chose luxury over integrity. Now you get to live with the consequences.”

“You’re going to destroy your own brother over a woman?!” Julian shrieked, his voice cracking into hysterical panic. “You’ll pay for this, Sebastian! I swear to God I’ll tell the media everything—!”

I hung up the phone and blocked his number permanently.

Ten minutes later, my attorney, Victoria Sterling, called me back with an update.

“Mr. Vance, I’ve just received word from the district attorney’s office,” Victoria reported professionally. “Your brother tried to approach prosecutors offering to testify against your mother in exchange for complete immunity. Unfortunately for him, our security footage and financial audits prove he was an active, willing participant in both the elder financial fraud and the domestic abuse conspiracy. The DA is moving forward with felony indictments for both of them.”

“Let the law take its course,” I replied steadily. “No special favors. No backroom deals.”
