Chapter 5 - The High Society Scandal and the Public Fall

By Thursday morning, the storm had broken across Chicago’s elite social circles with the devastating force of a hurricane.

Eleanor Vance had spent three decades meticulously crafting an image as a philanthropic matriarch, a pillar of society, and the proud mother of a self-made tech and logistics titan. Her social calendar was packed with charity galas, country club luncheons, and exclusive board meetings where she reigned supreme.

That all unraveled before noon.

When Eleanor’s platinum credit cards—funded by my company—were aggressively declined at an exclusive Michigan Avenue boutique and a gold-tier country club dining room, the public humiliation was instantaneous. Worse still, my corporate legal team, led by senior partner Victoria Sterling, had formally filed civil embezzlement and financial fraud charges against both Eleanor and Julian, attaching public court dockets that were immediately picked up by local news outlets and financial blogs.

I was sitting in my corner office on the forty-fifth floor of Vance Logistics Tower when my intercom buzzed.

“Sir, your mother is in the lobby,” my executive assistant, Sarah, announced, her voice tight with suppressed tension. “She’s demanding entry to the executive suite, and she’s causing quite a scene near the elevators.”

“Let her up,” I instructed calmly. “Bring her straight to the private conference room.”

Ten minutes later, the heavy glass doors of the executive conference room swung open.

Eleanor looked like a ghost of her former self. Her designer Chanel suit, usually immaculate, was wrinkled at the cuffs; her hair was slightly disheveled, and her face was pale with a mixture of exhaustion and incandescent rage. She marched across the room, slamming her leather handbag onto the mahogany table.

“Have you completely lost your mind, Sebastian?!” she shouted, her voice echoing off the glass walls. “The police called me this morning about an embezzlement audit! The country club revoked my membership! My friends are screening my calls! Do you have any idea what you’ve done to my reputation?!”

I remained seated at the head of the table, resting my hands neatly folded in front of me. I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice.

“Your reputation?” I asked quietly. “You’re worried about your country club membership while my wife spent eight months being starved, beaten, and humiliated under your roof?”

“She lied! She’s playing the victim!” Eleanor shrieked, leaning over the table. “She wanted to tear this family apart from the day she married you! If you drop these ridiculous lawsuits right now and issue a public statement clearing my name, I might—might—consider forgiving you and allowing you back into the family.”

I let out a slow, deliberate breath, shaking my head in quiet disbelief.

“Mom, you still don't get it, do you?” I stood up slowly, towering over her. “There is no family left to forgive me. You destroyed it. Every single asset, every credit card, every vehicle, and every penny of allowance you and Julian were living on has been permanently severed by court order.”

Eleanor’s jaw dropped. The fierce, aggressive facade cracked, and for a split second, I saw genuine terror in her eyes.

“You... you can’t do that to your own mother,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “I raised you. I sacrificed everything for you.”

“You didn't sacrifice, Mother. You invested,” I corrected her coldly. “You treated me like a retirement fund and Clara like an indentured servant. Well, the investment has officially defaulted.”

I pressed the intercom button on the wall panel.

“Sarah, please escort Mrs. Vance out of the building. And make sure building security adds her biometric profile to the permanent blacklist. She is never permitted in this tower again.”

Two burly corporate security guards stepped into the conference room.

Eleanor screamed curses, thrashing against them as they firmly grabbed her arms and dragged her backward toward the elevators. Her high-society friends watched in horror from the lobby as the once-untouchable matriarch of the Vance family was physically ejected from the skyscraper her son built.
