Chapter 4 - The Heartbeat Beneath the Scars

The low frequency vibration drifted through the air. To human ears, it sounded like a strange, low hum of a tuning fork. But to a dog whose hearing was fifty times more sensitive, and whose left ear was currently ringing with agony, the tone acted as a acoustic anchor.

Cyrus’s ferocious growl faltered for a fraction of a second. His ears twitched. His head tilted erratically to the right—his good side.

"See?" Maisie whispered, her voice soothing and steady. "You can hear me now. The loud men are quiet."

Slowly, carefully, Maisie sat down flat on the dirty arena floor, crossing her legs. She was now lower than the dog, completely exposing her head and throat. In animal language, sitting down in front of an aggressive predator was either absolute submission or an absolute lack of threat.

Cyrus let out a sharp, confused huff. He lowered his front paws from the iron bars. His nostrils flared wildly as he caught her scent: soap, old paper, lavender oil from her mother's closet, and the complete, total absence of adrenaline or fear sweat.

Every other man who had approached that cage smelled like sweat, fear, and hostility. Maisie smelled like quiet.

"I'm opening the latch," Maisie announced softly, talking to the dog, not the audience. "Don't be scared of the noise."

She reached up with a small, steady hand and slid the heavy iron deadbolt to the left. The metal squeaked loudly—SCREEECH.

Cyrus flinched back into the far corner of his cage, his lips curling back over his teeth, a low warning rumble building in his chest.

Maisie didn't pull the door open. She simply left it unlatched, lowered her hand back to her lap, and resumed her low, steady hum.

One minute passed. The arena was so silent you could hear the rain beginning to strike the tin roof overhead.

Two minutes passed. Julian Hart stared, his hand hovering near his concealed shoulder holster, his eyes fixed on the black shape inside the cage.

Slowly, inch by painstaking inch, the massive black snout of the German Shepherd emerged from the darkness of the kennel. Cyrus pushed the iron door open with his nose. The steel swung wide with a slow creak.

The dog stepped out onto the dirt ring.

He was massive—his ribcage expanded with heavy, labored breaths, his tail held low and stiff, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He took one step toward the blind girl sitting on the floor. Then another.

Leo squeezed his eyes shut, praying silently.

Cyrus stood directly over Maisie. His massive head was larger than her torso. He lowered his snout until his wet black nose was less than an inch from her small, exposed throat. He sniffed deeply—once, twice.

Maisie didn't move a muscle. She didn't reach out to pet him. She knew better. She simply kept humming her low, gentle tone, letting him process her presence at his own pace.

Then, Cyrus did something no one in the mansion or the arena had ever seen him do.

He let out a long, shuddering sigh. The tension in his muscular back collapsed all at once. He lowered his hind legs, turned twice in a small circle, and laid his massive body flat down on the dirt right beside her, resting his heavy chin directly across her knees.
