Chapter 5 - Shadows in the VIP Balcony

Five minutes went by in absolute, unbroken silence.

The digital timer on the arena wall—a large red LED clock used for pit fights—crossed the 05:00 mark with a faint electronic beep.

Julian Hart stared down at the dirt floor. The massive, untameable beast that had put two professional trainers in the hospital was currently lying with his eyes half-closed, his heavy black tail giving two slow, rhythmic thumps against the dust every time Maisie stroked the top of his uninjured right ear.

"Time," Marcus whispered from behind Julian, his voice laced with uncharacteristic awe. "Five minutes, boss. She did it."

Julian stepped forward, his leather shoes crunching in the dirt. At the sound of his approach, Cyrus instantly raised his head, a low, protective growl vibrating in his chest, his lip curling back to show his teeth—not in wild panic this time, but in clear, guarded defense of the little girl sitting beside him.

"Easy, boy," Maisie murmured, resting her hand gently on the back of the dog's neck. "He's just talking."

Cyrus settled back down, though his sharp dark eyes remained locked onto Julian's every move.

Julian stopped three feet away. He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a pristine leather checkbook and a silver fountain pen, and signed his name with a flourish. He tore the check off and held it out.

"One million dollars," Julian said, his gray eyes unreadable. "As promised. Made out to your legal guardian."

Leo hurried forward, his hands trembling as he took the paper. He looked at the six zeroes written in crisp black ink, his knees feeling like jelly. "Mr. Hart... I don't know what to say—"

"Don't thank me," Julian said coldly, his attention returning entirely to Maisie. "She earned it. But the money stays with a condition."

Leo’s heart plummeted. "A condition?"

Julian knelt down in the dirt, bringing his sharp face level with Maisie's. "The dog goes where she goes. I bought Cyrus to be a perimeter guard for my estate in New Bedford. He’s useless to me if he only responds to a child... unless the child comes with him."

"No," Leo said instantly, stepping between Julian and his sister. "No way. We aren't mobsters, Mr. Hart. We’re taking the money and leaving."

"You owe Marco three thousand dollars, Leo," Julian said smoothly, standing back up to his full height. "And Marco owes me twenty grand. If you leave with that check, every loan shark from here to Boston will know you're holding a million in cash. You won't make it to the state line before someone takes it from you—and takes your sister."

Leo stopped cold. The cold reality of their situation hit him like a physical blow. Julian wasn't threatening them; he was simply stating the brutal math of their world.

"I can come," Maisie said quietly, reaching around behind her to locate the broken rivet on Cyrus's collar. With a surprisingly firm twist of her small fingers, she bent the metal spike back, freeing the dog's skin. Cyrus gave a soft, appreciative whine. "He needs his ear cleaned anyway."

Julian looked at the little girl, a rare, faint glimmer of something resembling respect flashing across his features. "Pack your bags, Leo. You’re moving into the guest house on the estate tonight."
