Chapter 10 - The First Quiet Sunset

Six months later, the coastal estate in New Bedford was bathed in the warm, amber light of a clear summer evening.

The Moretti syndicate had been entirely dismantled, its leadership scattered or imprisoned, leaving Julian Hart as the undisputed authority across the entire region. But the ruthless, cold reputation that had once made his name a terrifying whisper had transformed into something far more complex.

On the wide, manicured lawn overlooking the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, a brand-new training facility had been constructed. It wasn't a pit for illegal fights or aggressive attack dogs. It was a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center for service animals and working breeds, funded entirely by the Hart Foundation.

Sitting on a wooden bench near the cliff edge, Julian Hart sat with a cup of coffee, watching the sunset. He wore a simple linen shirt, his expensive suits traded for comfortable clothes on weekends.

In the middle of the lawn, Maisie was running through the grass, her clear, ringing laughter floating on the ocean breeze. Running right alongside her was Cyrus, his coat healthy and shining, his tail wagging furiously as he retrieved a rubber ball she had thrown by sense of direction.

Leo walked out onto the porch, carrying two glasses of iced tea. He had enrolled in the state university’s business program, his tuition fully paid by a trust fund Julian had established for the family.

"She loves it here, Mr. Hart," Leo said, stepping up to the bench and handing Julian a glass. "She hasn't had a single nightmare since we moved out of the city."

Julian took a sip of the tea, watching as Cyrus gently deposited the ball right at Maisie's feet, bumping his wet nose against her palm until she patted his head.

"She saved more than just the dog, Leo," Julian said softly, his gray eyes reflecting the golden light of the setting sun. "She saved everyone in this house."

Maisie stopped running, turning her head toward the bench. Though she couldn't see them, she smiled brightly, pointing out toward the ocean where the rhythmic sound of the waves crashed against the rocks below.

"Listen, Mr. Hart!" Maisie called out, her voice filled with pure, unburdened joy. "The water is singing today!"

Julian smiled—a warm, genuine smile that reached his eyes. He set his glass down, stood up from the bench, and walked out into the green grass to join the little girl and the dog who had taught a mafia boss how to finally hear the world.
