Chapter 9 - Fire in the Underground Arena

The breach was swift, violent, and absolute.

Julian’s team poured out of the lower drainage tunnels into the shadowed ground floor of Warehouse 2 like shadows made of lead. Suppressed gunfire spat through the darkness—thwip-thwip-thwip—as Moretti’s sentries were neutralized before they could give the alarm.

High above on the steel catwalks, Marco Moretti—a ruthless, scarred veteran of the New York crime families—realized his ambush had been compromised.

"Fire! Kill them all!" Marco screamed, firing an unsuppressed automatic pistol down into the gloom.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the vast industrial space in strobe-like bursts of orange light. Sparks flew as bullets ricocheted off metal shipping crates and concrete support beams.

In the chaos, a stray bullet struck a stack of chemical drums stored near the rear office. A deafening EXPLOSION rocked the warehouse, blowing out the upper windows and sending a towering wall of orange fire cascading across the main aisle.

"Fall back!" Marcus yelled, shielding his face from the intense heat. "The whole place is going up!"

In the blinding smoke and roaring flames, communication broke down instantly. Smoke filled the rafters, turning the warehouse into a swirling furnace of gray fog and searing heat.

Julian was knocked to the concrete floor by the concussive blast, his gun spinning out of his hand into the dark. Through the haze of fire, he saw Marco Moretti descending the iron stairs of the catwalk, a heavy revolver drawn, moving straight toward him.

Julian tried to stand, but a heavy steel beam dislodged by the explosion had pinned his left leg against the floor. He was trapped, blinded by smoke, with a rival boss advancing on him through the fire.

Suddenly, a massive black shape tore through the curtain of smoke.

Cyrus didn't bark. He launched himself through the wall of fire like a missile, his broad chest slamming directly into Marco Moretti’s torso, sending the mob boss crashing hard onto the concrete floor. The revolver clattered away into the dark.

Before Marco could recover, Cyrus pinned him to the floor, his massive jaws locking around the man's wrist, holding him with absolute, terrifying control—not mauling him, but neutralizing him entirely.

Through the dense smoke, a small, confident voice echoed.

"This way, Leo! The door is three steps to the left!"

Maisie walked calmly through the burning warehouse, completely unbothered by the blinding smoke that had disoriented every sighted man in the room. To her, the thick black fog made no difference at all. She navigated the maze of burning crates and falling debris by listening to the draft of cold ocean air blowing in through the open loading bay doors.

She reached Julian, kneeling down beside him in the heat.

"The beam is hollow, Mr. Hart," Maisie said, reaching down to locate the point where the iron rested against his leg. "Leo, lift from the end!"

Leo, sprinting up behind her, grabbed the far end of the scorched steel beam and heaved with all his strength. With a loud grunt, the beam shifted four inches—just enough for Julian to pull his leg free.

Julian stood up, leaning heavily on Leo's shoulder, and looked down at Marco Moretti, who was currently weeping on the floor as Cyrus stood over him, growling softly every time the man tried to twitch his fingers.

"It's over, Marco," Julian said, his voice cold and raspy from the smoke.
