Chapter 6 - The Sabotage

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of absolute terror. When I returned to my apartment, it had been tossed. My laptop was gone, my files on the abuse were wiped, and there was an envelope on my bed.

It was a restraining order. And it wasn't just a piece of paper. It was a formal accusation of breaking and entering, harassment, and child endangerment.

By the time I reached the police station to reclaim my belongings, the narrative had already been rewritten. The officers weren't looking at me with suspicion; they were looking at me with pity, as if I were a tragic figure suffering from a breakdown.

"Ms. Thorne," Sergeant Miller said, looking uncomfortable. "Mr. Sterling has provided evidence that you’ve been stalking his residence. He’s concerned for the child’s safety. There’s a court order in place. If you come within five hundred feet of that house or your daughter, you will be arrested on sight."

"He stole my evidence!" I cried. "He’s framing me!"

"We have no evidence of a break-in," the officer said firmly. "Only your word against his. And given your... recent behavior, the court is siding with the father."

I was legally paralyzed. I sat in my car, trembling. I had lost my daughter, I had lost my job, and now I was being branded a criminal. The silence in my apartment was deafening. I felt the cold, creeping sensation of defeat. Mark and Miriam hadn't just beaten me; they had erased me.

But as I looked at the passenger seat, I saw the one thing I had managed to keep: a small, hidden pocket in my bag where I’d stashed a few pages I’d ripped from the journal before the struggle. It was enough.
