Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The night of the dinner, a torrential desert storm turned the sky ink-black, masking my approach. The rain was a deafening roar against the luxury SUVs parked in the driveway. While the guests were sequestered in the dining room, laughing over expensive wine, I navigated the perimeter.

I didn't use the front door. I used the service entrance, moving with a silent, primal focus. Inside, the house felt different—darker, heavier. I bypassed the main hallway, heading straight for the staircase. My heart wasn't beating; it was counting down.

I reached the second floor just as I heard a door creak open. I ducked into the shadows of an alcove. Miriam stepped out, clutching a glass of wine, her face twisted in a sneer. She was heading toward Hailey’s room.

I followed, my breath shallow. When she opened the door, I saw her—Hailey, curled into a ball on the edge of the bed.

"I told you, no light after nine," Miriam hissed, stepping toward her. "You have no respect for the house, do you? Just like your mother."

I didn't wait. I lunged from the shadows, grabbing Miriam by the arm and spinning her around. She gasped, the wine glass shattering against the floor.

"Get away from her," I whispered, the rage finally finding its voice.

Miriam’s eyes widened, then narrowed into slits of pure malice. "You? You really are as stupid as I thought." She reached for a panic button hidden on the wall, but I was faster. I tackled her, pinning her against the vanity.

"Hailey, get your coat!" I yelled.

Hailey looked up, her eyes wide with shock, but the moment she saw me, the shell cracked. She scrambled off the bed, clutching her small backpack.

"Elena!" Mark’s voice boomed from the hallway. He had heard the glass break.

He charged into the room, his face purple with rage. "You! Get your hands off her!"

He reached for me, but I didn't back down. I pulled the small digital recorder I had recovered from my previous trip out of my pocket and pressed play. Through the speakers, the sound of Miriam’s voice echoed clearly through the room: “Greedy little girls who steal grow up to be burdens. I am merely correcting a character flaw.”

Mark froze. The recording continued—the sound of Hailey’s sobbing, the sickening sizzle of the burner, and his own voice, chillingly detached: “Don’t exaggerate. She was just trying to discipline her.”
