Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The room fell into a deathly silence. Mark stared at the device in my hand, his face draining of color. He knew what that recording meant—it was the end of his reputation, his power, and his freedom.
"That's a lie," he stammered, but he sounded small.
"It's all on there, Mark," I said, my voice steady. "And I already sent a copy to the local news and the Attorney General’s office. They’re likely pulling into the driveway as we speak."
Blue and red lights began to strobe against the bedroom window, cutting through the darkness of the storm. The police weren't here to arrest me this time.
The chaos that followed was a blur. Officers swarmed the house. I watched as Miriam was led out in handcuffs, her face a mask of impotent rage, still muttering about "order" and "discipline." Mark was cuffed in the foyer, his expensive suit soaked by the rain as he was shoved into the back of a squad car.
The lead investigator, a woman who had finally been alerted by the evidence I’d provided to the state, approached me. "Ms. Thorne? We have the recordings. We have the medical reports from the school nurse. You and your daughter are safe now."

I picked up Hailey, who was shaking so hard her teeth were chattering. I wrapped my jacket around her, pulling her against my chest. She buried her face in my neck, and for the first time in months, she let out a long, shuddering breath.
"I'm here, baby," I whispered, tears finally streaming down my face. "I'm here."
