Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The trial was brief. With the audio evidence and the corroborating testimony from the school nurse, there was no defense for the Sterlings. The "house of cards" finally collapsed. Miriam was sentenced to prison for child abuse, and Mark faced years for conspiracy and endangerment.
It has been a year since that night.
We live in a small house near the coast now. The walls are painted in soft, warm colors, and there is always a loaf of bread on the counter. There are no locks on the doors, and there is no "permission" required to be hungry.
Hailey is seven going on eight, and she’s starting to learn how to laugh again. We spend our weekends at the beach, watching the tide roll in. The scars on her fingers are fading, and the ones on her heart are healing, one day at a time.

I still have nightmares occasionally, but when I wake up, I don't look for a phone or a lawyer. I walk into the next room, watch my daughter sleeping peacefully, and know that the fight was worth every single second.
