Chapter 5 - The Gala of Ghosts

The invitation arrived on thick, cream-colored cardstock, hand-delivered by a courier who didn’t speak a word. It was for the "Founder’s Centennial Gala"—the most exclusive event of the decade, held at the Sterling Estate. The irony was suffocating. Beatrice wanted to flaunt her invincibility, holding the event on her own turf, inviting the very people who had watched the viral video to "prove" her dominance.
Elena didn't just accept; she arrived like a storm front. She didn't wear the modest dress she’d worn at the previous gala. She wore a midnight-blue gown, sharp-edged and modern, designed by a protégé she had secretly funded years ago. She walked into the Sterling ballroom not as a guest, but as an architect assessing a building about to be demolished.
The music shifted as she entered. People stopped talking. The air felt thin, electric. Beatrice stood at the center of the room, surrounded by a phalanx of admirers. When she saw Elena, her eyes didn't flicker—they sharpened.
"You have a lot of nerve," Beatrice hissed as Elena glided past.
"And you have a lot of ghosts, Beatrice," Elena replied, her voice low and calm. "I hope you enjoy the evening. It’s going to be a night of memories."
Elena spent the first hour not drinking, but observing. She moved through the crowd, dropping seeds. She spoke to the bank directors who had frozen her assets, mentioning "unrealized liabilities" in the Sterling accounts. She spoke to the city’s top journalists, planting questions about the mysterious surge in charitable donations to "non-existent orphanages" in the Sterling records.

By midnight, the atmosphere had shifted. The laughter wasn't genuine; it was nervous. People were looking at their phones, checking stock prices, whispering in corners. Beatrice noticed. She started to sweat behind her impeccable makeup. She tried to maintain the facade, to toast the legacy of her family, but her hand trembled as she held her flute.
Then, the screens in the ballroom—intended to play a loop of the Sterling family’s "greatest charitable moments"—glitched. For a split second, an image of a ledger appeared: Sterling Holdings, Audit 2018, Redacted. It vanished before anyone could save it, but the seed of panic was firmly planted.
