Chapter 6 - The Cracks in the Facade

Beatrice retreated to her private study, the air thick with the smell of old paper and expensive perfume. Her breathing was ragged. She didn't just hate Elena; she was beginning to fear her.
As she paced, a memory she had buried deep bubbled to the surface. She wasn't born into this mansion. She was the daughter of a janitor who had worked here. She had watched the "real" owners of the estate treat her family like dirt, much like she had treated the little girl in the pink dress. She hadn't ascended to greatness; she had simply become the monster she once feared.
There was a soft knock at the door. It wasn't a servant. It was Elena.
Elena walked in without being invited, her presence filling the room. "You were Beatrice Miller once. You remember the sound of a vacuum in a quiet house? You remember your mother’s hands being red from the cleaning chemicals?"
Beatrice froze, her face turning ashen. "How do you know that?"
May you like
"Because," Elena said, stepping closer, "I grew up in the same district. I’m the 'street trash' who learned how to read code instead of cleaning floors. I didn't come here to steal your life, Beatrice. I came to show you that you’ve become the very thing you once tried to escape."
The conversation was a psychological cage match. Beatrice tried to threaten her, to leverage her remaining power, but it sounded hollow. Elena stripped away the layers, one by one. She spoke not with anger, but with the chilling detachment of someone who had already won the war. Beatrice collapsed into her chair, the mask of the high-society queen finally shattering, revealing the terrified little girl who was still, at heart, running from her past.
