Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

Victory, however, was not a straight line. Elena returned home to find her office in chaos. Her lead developer, a man named Julian whom she had trusted like a brother, had vanished.

With him went the secure drive containing the final, damning evidence of the Sterling money laundering scheme.

Elena stared at the empty safe in her office. The betrayal stung more than any of Beatrice’s insults. She quickly accessed the security logs. Julian hadn't just stolen the data; he had sold it back to the highest bidder. Beatrice had found his price.

The next morning, the headlines changed. “Local Tech Mogul Accused of Extortion and Corporate Espionage.”

Beatrice had turned the narrative. By paying off Julian to leak fabricated, tampered versions of Elena’s own data, she had made it look like Elena was the one orchestrating the financial crimes. Elena’s firm was raided by federal agents within the hour.

Sitting in a sterile interrogation room, Elena felt the walls closing in. The world she had meticulously built was being dismantled in real-time. She had played the perfect game, but she had underestimated the desperation of a cornered predator.

She looked at her watch. She had two hours before the formal arrest warrant was issued. She was effectively finished. Her reputation was in tatters, her assets were frozen, and she was seconds away from losing custody of Maya.

"You really thought you could win?" a voice echoed in the hallway. It was Beatrice, walking past the interrogation room with the smug, triumphant gait of a victor. She stopped at the glass, locking eyes with Elena. "Some of us are born to rule, Elena. Others are just meant to be scrubbed away."

Elena didn't look down. She leaned toward the glass, a faint, cryptic smile playing on her lips. "Beatrice, you’re so focused on the move I already made, you haven't realized that the game was rigged in my favor from the very first day. You bought a traitor. But did you check the source code of what you bought?"

Beatrice paused, her smile wavering. Elena’s confidence was too absolute to be a bluff. The room grew deathly quiet as the implications began to dawn on her.
