Chapter 2 - The Unveiling

Dominic’s heavy leather boots echoed like thunder against the Italian marble as he crossed the grand ballroom. The black leather folder in his hands looked small, but the silence that fell over the room gave it the weight of an executioner’s axe.
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around her champagne flute. The smirking confidence that had defined her face for the past half hour eroded into a tense, rigid grimace.
"What is this?" Vanessa sneered, attempting to recover her composure. She cast a mocking glare toward Dominic. "Did your guard dog bring you your lap blanket, Julian? Or is this another pathetic attempt to stay relevant?"
I did not answer her. I opened the folder.
Inside lay thirty pages of bank statements, encrypted email printouts, and wire transfer receipts. On top was a contract bearing the forged signature of my late father, assigning forty percent of my family’s voting shares to an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.
"Read the room, Vanessa," I said, my voice low, carrying effortless authority despite my seated position. "You thought the crash killed my mind along with my spine."
I pulled out the first document and held it up. "Three days after my car went over the cliff, Uncle Martin signed off on an emergency asset liquidation. He cited my 'incapacitation.' And who was the primary beneficiary of that liquidation?" I turned my head slowly toward Daniel, my lifelong friend and Vice President of Operations.
Daniel went pale. His hand trembled as he set his whiskey glass onto a passing waiter’s tray. "Julian, listen to me—that was standard risk management. The board was panicking—"
"The board wasn't panicking," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping like iron. "The board was being fed falsified medical reports."
Dominic pulled a secondary file from his jacket and slapped it onto the glass table beside my chair. The loud crack made half the room jump.
"Dr. Harrison received two million dollars into a Swiss account forty-eight hours after Julian's crash," Dominic announced to the entire room. "The payment was routed through a firm owned by Vanessa’s mother, Eleanor."
Gasps rippled through the elite crowd. Guests who had been snickering moments ago shrank back, suddenly desperate to distance themselves from Vanessa and her family. Eleanor’s face drained of all color. She reached out to grasp her daughter's arm, but Vanessa shoved her away, her blue eyes blazing with toxic fury.
"This is ridiculous!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking. "You’re making up lies because you can’t handle being a useless cripple! You’re broken, Julian! You’re nothing!"
Beside me, Clara remained on her knees, her hands still gently holding the blanket over my legs. She looked up at Vanessa, her brown eyes steady and fearless.
"He is twice the man you will ever be," Clara said quietly.
Vanessa turned her rage onto the maid. She raised her hand, her long, diamond-encrusted nails aimed straight for Clara’s face. "Shut up, you worthless servant!"
Before Vanessa’s hand could make contact, my hand shot up out of the wheelchair.
I caught her wrist in mid-air.
The room went so quiet you could hear the hum of the crystal chandeliers.
May you like
My grip was like an iron vise. Vanessa gasped in shock, her eyes widening in sheer horror as she tried and failed to pull her wrist free.
"You don't lay a finger on her," I whispered.
