Chapter 4 - Gathering the Intelligence

I needed proof. Hard, unrefutable, legally binding evidence that could not be spun by high-priced divorce attorneys or explained away as a misunderstanding.

Quietly, I turned away from the master bedroom door, pushing the cleaning cart down the hall toward Ethan’s private study—a mahogany-paneled room on the opposite wing of the second floor.

Unlike the bedroom, the study door was locked with a heavy biometric deadbolt. However, knowing Ethan’s laziness with security codes, I approached the brass keypad, entered my own administrative override code that he had forgotten to change after our last system update, and pressed my thumb against the scanner.

Beep.

The green light flashed, and the heavy door swung open silently on its oiled hinges.

I slipped inside, pulling the door closed behind me until only a sliver of light illuminated the dark room. The study smelled of expensive leather, cigar smoke, and expensive cologne. It was the command center of his deception.

Moving swiftly in the shadows, I walked straight to his oversized mahogany desk. The laptop was sitting open in sleep mode. I tapped the spacebar, and the screen flickered to life, demanding a password. Ethan was arrogant enough to use a combination of his birthday and his mistress's initials. I tried three variations based on what I had heard downstairs, and on the third attempt—7812-MD—the desktop unlocked.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my hands remained steady.

I plugged a high-speed encrypted flash drive—which I always kept hidden in the lining of my cleaning belt for emergency estate audits—into the USB port. With a few rapid keystrokes, I accessed his local files, email archives, and cloud-synced legal documents.

What I found on that screen made my blood run cold.

There were draft divorce petitions already prepared by a ruthless corporate law firm in downtown Dallas—petitions that falsely claimed I suffered from psychological instability, detailing manufactured episodes of erratic behavior and financial negligence. Attached to the drafts were asset concealment spreadsheets detailing the systematic siphoning of corporate funds into offshore accounts registered under shell corporations—accounts controlled entirely by Ethan and Chloe.

He hadn't just been cheating on me. He had been embezzling from my father's company for over eighteen months, using corporate capital to fund Chloe’s luxury apartment in Uptown, her designer handbags, and her extravagant lifestyle.

I highlighted every single file, every scanned contract, every incriminating email chain between Ethan and his co-conspirators, and transferred them directly onto my flash drive. A progress bar flashed on the screen: Transfer complete (4.2 GB).

I ejected the drive, slipped it safely into my pocket, and locked the computer screen back to its sleep mode.

As I turned to leave the study, my eyes caught a framed photograph resting on the corner of his bookshelf. It was a picture of Ethan and me taken during our trip to Paris three years ago. In the photo, he was smiling warmly, his arm wrapped around my waist, whispering something that had made me laugh.

I walked over, picked up the heavy silver frame, and stared at the smiling stranger in the glass.

Then, deliberately, I let the frame slip from my fingers.

Crash.

The glass shattered into a thousand tiny pieces across the hardwood floor.

Inside the master bedroom down the hall, the laughter abruptly stopped.
