Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

"What was that?" Melanie’s voice rang out sharply from down the corridor, laced with sudden irritation.
"Stay here," Ethan muttered.
Heavy, hurried footsteps approached the study door. I didn't panic. I didn't run. I simply stepped behind the heavy velvet drapes masking the corner window, pulling the fabric closed around me just as the study door swung wide open.
"Hello? Is someone in here?" Ethan’s voice demanded, harsh and authoritative.
I heard the sharp click of the wall switch as the overhead chandelier flooded the room with brilliant light. Footsteps crunched across the shattered glass near the bookshelf.
"Damn it," Ethan muttered angrily to himself. "Must have been the cleaning girl. Incompetent help..."
He walked over to his desk, checked to ensure nothing obvious was disturbed—failing to notice that the digital access logs had recorded an administrative override—and muttered a curse under his breath before turning around and walking out, slamming the study door shut behind him.
I waited two full minutes, listening to his retreating footsteps fade back down the hall toward the master suite, before stepping out from behind the drapes.
My reflection in the dark windowpane showed a woman who bore no resemblance to the docile wife who had packed her bags for Houston five days ago. The soft, accommodating smile was gone, replaced by an expression of cold, unyielding granite.
The intelligence was gathered. The evidence was secured. The trap was fully constructed. Now, it was time to spring it on a global stage.
The following morning, the household began to stir just as the first pale rays of Texas sunlight broke over the horizon.
Disguised once more in my gray maid’s uniform, I quietly exited the mansion through the service entrance before Ethan or Melanie awoke. Grace was waiting for me in the garden shed, her face etched with worry.
"Mrs. Carter? Are you alright? What happened last night? I heard shouting..."
"I'm better than alright, Grace," I said, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. "I have everything we need. Now, I need you to do exactly as I say over the next forty-eight hours. Act normal. Serve them breakfast if they ask. Do not give them the slightest reason to suspect anything."

"And you, ma'am? Where are you going?"
"I’m going to see my attorneys," I replied calmly. "And then, I’m going to prepare for a very special party."
