Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

"Katherine..." Ethan choked out, taking a stumbling step backward from the podium, his voice barely a breath. "What... what are you doing here? You weren't supposed to be back until tomorrow..."

"Surprise, darling," I said, my voice cutting through the silent ballroom like a razor blade. I walked down the grand marble staircase, every step echoing rhythmically against the stone. The crowd parted instinctively, sensing the raw, pent-up fury radiating from my presence.

Melanie stood frozen beside the podium, her mouth slightly open, her eyes darting frantically toward the exit doors as security guards quietly blocked the exits.

I stopped ten feet from the podium, looking up at the man who had thought he could erase me with a stroke of a pen.

"You look paler than usual, Ethan," I remarked coolly. "Is something wrong? Did the corporate restructuring not go quite according to plan?"

"Katherine, please—let's not make a scene in front of our guests," Ethan stammered, his professional charm completely evaporated, exposing the desperate, cornered coward beneath. "Whatever you think you saw, whatever misunderstandings have been fed to you—"

"There is no misunderstanding, Ethan," I interrupted, turning to address the stunned crowd of Dallas socialites, business partners, and investors.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I raised my voice, ensuring every person in the room heard every single syllable. "For the past twelve years, you have known my husband as a self-made titan of industry. You have praised his vision, admired his success, and applauded his integrity. But tonight, under this roof, I think it is only fair that you know the complete truth."

I gestured to the federal marshal beside me.

With a crisp flick of his wrist, the marshal stepped forward and unloaded a stack of printed financial audits onto the podium directly in front of Ethan.

"What you are looking at," I continued, pacing slowly across the marble floor, "is a complete forensic accounting of Castillo Investments and Vance Holdings over the past eighteen months. It details unauthorized corporate embezzlement, systematic asset concealment, fraudulent loan applications, and the illegal diversion of over four million dollars in venture capital funds to finance private luxuries—and private mistresses."

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Whispers erupted like wildfire among the guests.

"You're... you're lying!" Melanie shrieked from the stage, her voice cracking with hysteria. "She's unstable! She's making it all up!"

I turned my gaze slowly toward her. "Am I, Melanie? Or did you genuinely believe that the woman whose wardrobe you raided, whose robes you wore, and whose home you infested was just a simple housewife who wouldn't check the corporate registries?"

I turned back to Ethan, who had collapsed against the edge of the podium, trembling violently.

"The mansion you are standing in," I said softly, leaning in so only he could hear the final, devastating blow, "is legally owned by the Vance Family Trust. The company you manage is wholly owned by my primary equity shares. And the divorce petition you so cleverly drafted in your private study?"

I reached into my clutch, pulled out a thick packet of legal papers, and tossed them deliberately into his face, watching them scatter across the polished floor like autumn leaves.

"I’ve already signed it. But with one minor modification: you are walking out of these gates tonight with absolutely nothing. No accounts, no cars, no title, and no future in Dallas."

Before Ethan could utter a single word in defense, two federal agents stepped forward, placing cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Ethan Carter, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, and interstate embezzlement," the lead agent announced formally, guiding a paralyzed, weeping Ethan away from the podium and past the stunned crowd of elites who watched in horrified silence.

Melanie burst into tears, grabbing her designer bag and fleeing frantically toward the service exit, completely abandoning the man she had conspired with the moment the money vanished.
