Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

The following morning, the mansion was blissfully quiet.
The guests were gone. The police inquiries had concluded for the night. The media outlets in Dallas were already buzzing with headlines detailing the spectacular downfall of one of the city's most prominent corporate frauds, though the true extent of my family's hidden wealth remained safely shielded behind a wall of corporate privacy laws.
I stood on the second-floor balcony, holding a steaming cup of dark roast coffee, watching the morning sun paint the Dallas skyline in brilliant shades of gold and amber.
Grace stepped out onto the balcony, holding a fresh vase of white roses and placing them gently on the wrought-iron table.
"Good morning, Mrs. Carter," Grace said, a soft, genuine smile gracing her lips. "The estate managers called. The locks have all been changed. Your attorneys handled the asset forfeiture paperwork before dawn."
I took a slow sip of my coffee, feeling the profound, unshakeable warmth of absolute freedom settle deep into my bones. The illusion was gone. The parasite had been excised.
"Thank you, Grace," I said, turning to look at her. "And from today forward, you are no longer our housekeeper. As of this morning, you are the Director of Estate Operations for Vance Properties, with a salary that reflects your true loyalty and worth."
Grace’s eyes widened with shock and overwhelming gratitude, tears welling up in her eyes as she reached out to embrace me. "Thank you, ma'am. Thank you so much."
